My thoughts exactly davewasbaloo, when I looked at it I immediately thought it was an art deco design which would fit in with the theme of the TOT.

Hitler borrowed the swastika and it's common placement was tilted 45 degrees on Nazi flags, emblems, etc. None of these lampost designs were tilted 45 degrees. They are just geometric shapes that have meaning for a number of different cultures.

How many examples of crosses can you find everywhere? Some have religous intent and some don't. Common sense allows you to make that distinction. Same should apply here.

I actually noticed this exact thing today. I was wandering around the USC campus, when I suddenly noticed that all of the lamp posts have that exact same design around the base. As soon as I noticed it the first time, I saw that all the other ones matched it, and thought of this thread immediately. Not that USC is a direct lift from 1930's Hollywood, but it is a relatively historical area for southern California architecture. This leads me to believe that the designers simply wanted something that would be authentic, and instead of designing their own lamp posts, they used ones that are already being manufactured for other businesses.
