ORWEN: Since you know Hong Kong Disneyland guests and their tastes, do they know who Mary Poppins is? She doesn't seem to be out and about at that particular park. Also, how well do they know Cruella DeVille, Robin Hood or even us Cauldron girls from The Black Cauldron?

First, let me clarify -- I don't have TOO much knowledge, just what I've picked up over a few years over the border in Guangzhou, with a lot (an embarassing lot) of trips to HK and a HKDL visit every time. I'd estimate about 1 visit per month. But I'm not Chinese, and what I know is based on discussions with locals, visits to the park, and visits to other theme parks and minor tourist attractions. So I don't claim to be an expert, but I do have a lot of opinions.

I went to a show that celebrates a Qing Dynasty pre-revolutionary heroine one and Bugs and Mickey showed up in the finale. I've been on a lot of buses where Mickey is printed on the upholstery for no reason. And when young people here talk about the Park, it's always in terms of going to see Mickey.

    2) "Lesser" characters don't show up at all in the public mindset. They do have the Jolly Holiday band here, and I'm pretty sure Mary and Bert are sometimes with them, but I'm not sure.

I don't recall seeing Cruella or Robin Hood around. I am SURE there's no references to the lesser-known Disney films such as (many apologies!) Black Cauldron, Great Mouse Detective, Oliver & Co, etc.

Mulan's about the most obscure character I see regularly, probably based on a misguided idea that people will feel some affinity for her. If they bought rights to a Kung Fu Panda costume, though, lines would go 'round the block.

    My 2 cents.

He had a very special tour guide. :)

I've a lot of time for Michael and Jane - he is still deeply passionate about the company.

It is very easy and convenient to blame MDE for "cheap projects" but that wasn't his mantra per se. He was more than happy to cut a big check to get into the cruise line business for example.

More often than not it was WDA/WDP&R that did the deals and calculated the budgetary requirements that went for board approval. MDE didn't penny pinch unless he felt there was a risk.

I always thought that because of DLP he started to cut budgets whenever possible. It seems I have a false perception of Michael Eisner. But to my defense that is the picture you have gotten during his last years.

In his early years he was Disney's best CEO.
