It seems more like it is a decision from inside DisCo that HK Disneyland should draw from the mainland. I suppose they have crazy projection numbers they want to reach, and are also in a panic over the low numbers they have right now.

I get the impression that HK Disneyland was intended from the beginning to be an international park and not a locals one. They should decide on what market they are trying to reach and focus on it, but like everything else about this park it seems like they don't have a clear focus or execution on it... we get a little of trying to draw the locals in, and a little of trying to draw from the mainland.

The future economically with China lay in the mainland though, especially if Shanghai becomes more of a powerhouse of a port city.

If they are going to pop the 7-10 million annual attendance figure though, they will definitely have to draw more international visitors and more visitors from the mainland... in which case USS and SHDL will be competitors.

They were predicting 5 million for Hk Disneyland right from the start and shooting for 7 million. That's roughly the population of HK and the new Territories.

Anything higher than that and you are drawing from outside your local population base. All the other parks have attendance roughly equal to their local population, WDW excepted.

Shanghai has around 20 million people living in it or in one of the adjacent cities. Tokyo Disneyland has the same good fortune, since the Kanto plain includes nearby Chiba and Yokohama.

The only thing to hold Shanghai Disneyland back from the start is the per capita income of the population of China. However Beijing and Shanghai both have a growing middle class... so the potential is there to be much larger than HK Disneyland and to do it as mainly a locals park.

Frankly the only way I can see HK Disneyland ever drawing more than 10 million a year is for it to be an international park and given its small size and mismanagement right from the beginning, I just don't see it happening.

It remains to be seen how China's economy will continue to grow as the global economic crisis continues to deepen.

If HK SAR pulls out. The resort closes and none of this matters.

And I can't believe Disney would go forth in Shanghai if that were ever allowed to transpire.

In a nation where the concept of 'face' is so important, it just seems like Iger and Co always have egg (or worse) on theirs.

Maybe they just have the wrong people working there and saying the wrong things?
