Group C gets what's left, which means squeezing into middle seats mostly, making everyone stand up, into the aisle, more cramming of junk into the already full bins. To me it would be much more efficient to take the C passengers, make them sit towards the back of the plane, B passengers forward of that, A passengers up front. Also, I'd really, really, really start enforcing a limit on the size of carry-ons. People haul so much junk on with them, it's really nuts.

Especially once you add in stick carrier, helmet and pad bags.

By the time people take off their jackets and cram them in the bins, plus the big rolling carry-ons, garment bags, computers, their McDonald's bag, stuff under the seat, it fills up fast. Every couple of months I take a late evening flight back from LAX, and it's always full. There's only been once in 2 years that they haven't had to check something because space runs out.

The only time I've ever seen a smooth boarding with assigned seats was with a flight that was running late and had to "turn around" quickly else it would have not nade it out before cerfew. In that case, the gate crew lined *everyone* up by row, back to front, and within rows, window, middle, aisle. With Southwest, if I have an A or B card, I don't care if everyone lines up. Just because everyone else lines up doesn't mean that I need to. Still, in some airports, Southwest has divided up the seating areas into A, B, and C areas. Furthermore, if I book my flight at the last minute, I have just as good a shot at a decent seat as those folks who were lucky enough to be able to plan their trips in advance. Last month, I had to make a last minute trip across country, and got stuck in a middle seat in the last row of the aircraft. As for traveling with friends, I've found that, unless we book as a group (and that's not always practical), it's nearly impossible to sit together. However, if we're all on a Southwest flight, the folks with the A cards will hold seats for those who have B or C cards. (We used to love sitting in the lounge areas, but alas, they don't have those any more.)
