I usually stay near Washington Circle and the George Washington University Medical Center.

Even though he stayed in an areas that is supposed to be not-so-great (Renoir Hotel, Mid-Market District) he had no problem walking around at night. I know there were several public transportation options available right at the hotel. It sounded like a great time, though I might try for a little more upscale neighborhood.

Great boutique hotels, rooftop lounges, and Victorian structures. The TJ Trolley goes to Old Town as well as the border. The new Kids Museum is totally unique-changing interactive exhibits designed by contemporary artists.

We stayed off of M Street, and it was a bit of a walk, but it didn't matter to us. Beautiful scenery.
