I don't mean to shock you this early in the morning, but idiots get better TV ratings.

If Gingrich implodes (always a possibility), it wouldn't surprise me if somebody else got a boomlet. The GOP base needs an "anti-Romney," and so does the media, who hate nothing so much as a boring race with an inevitable nominee.

The good news for Newt is that there's only 5 weeks left till Iowa. And about Dec. 21, everybody starts taking off for the holidays and paying much less attention, so there's only about 3 weeks for him to make a big gaffe and precipitate that boomlet. So if he can just hold off till then, he could make it a Newt/Mitt showdown.

("Newt/Mitt?" Showdown of the weird nicknames!)

If he does stumble, look for the media to give somebody else a boomlet, though.

What amazes me is that in all the media focus on IA and NH, they seem to all overlook the fact that neither IA nor NH has been determinative in GOP races for decades. The determinative race for them has always been SC. And although I think Romney will ultimately win, THAT's why he needs to worry. If it starts to look like he can't win in the south, he's in trouble. He's lucky that the next southern primary after SC is FL, a much more diverse state that definitely has the "standard" southern GOP demographic (mostly in the northern portion) but has other demographics as well.
