On the way home, the bus does take you directly to your hotel. We're really struggling with this. DH really wants to go to US, but I don't want to drag the kids on and off 2 different buses, etc.

You are not in control of your day, you might have to leave before you want to, or after you want to. I would rent a car if at all possible. I also agree that I would not try to visit Universal on the same day I had to be back at DL at any particular time, too stressful!
