The Orphanage was quite good, as was 1408 and The Mist as far as recent stuff goes.

And ofcourse you can never go wrong with the classics, Halloween, Psycho, A Nightmare on Elm St, Dawn of the Dead, The Silence of the Lambs and so on.

Back on topic - Mrs Elder P, I'll look for that movie! Sounds *perfect* for up here in the forest. Blair Witch Project, while mixed reviews, freaked me out because we are heavily wooded here and hike a lot. I kept looking for those little tied up twigs and stopped poking at things on the ground after that LOL

It's got chills, heart and a nice mystery, too. It is not gory at all. Good performances by a lot of character actors you'll recognize. The special effects are not stellar, but are made up for by the strength of the story, the performances, and a great overall spooky mood.

Now Sean, You throw in this great early sixties bit...Peeping Tom...Can this be found on DVD these days? Is this more of the great things from that era that promised nurses would be in the lobby to make sure that anyone shocked by the film would be taken care of? You know, Blood Feast, etc. type of stuff???? Those were fun times will such silly marketing gimmicks....

There is one film I want to say came from the seventies that really creeped me out...The Town That Dreaded Sundown...Does anyone around here remember that one?

This is the creepy story of twin boys. One is good, the other one not so much. The setting is a family farm during the 1930s. A series of "accidents" leaves Niles feeling than his brother Holland may be up to no good. And it features a still-shocking ending that was quite a big deal when the movie was first released.

Yes, the Criterion Collection released this a while back, and it is still in print.

Interesting, disturbing movie. It effectively ended the career of the director.

I didn't see it, but I remember that the radio ads scared me as a kid. I really should check out the DVD.

Ohhhhhh yeah. One of my favorites from DePalma's "Hitchcock Tribute" years. It's held up well over the years.

    >>The Other (1972, not to be confused with Nicole Kidman's "The Others)<<

Definitely creeped me out as a kid. Seemed like CBS ran it once a year for a while.

Yeah. Didn't much care for it. Pretty much just a slasher/mass killer flick, which aren't my faves. Though it did have Maryann (Dawn Wells) in it.

So, kennect, you mention some of the other suggestions and what you thought, so obviously you've seen them. Have you seen the original Dutch version of The Vanishing? If not, you should. Creepy, creepy, creepy.

It's usually credited as being the first "anthology" horror film (e.g. Tales from the Crypt, House that Dripped Blood, et al), and the linking story is just as good as the "main" stories, unlike in most of this style. They even put a comic episode in just to break the tension, but the others (and the linking story) are great, and really creepy. It originated several horror tropes that later became very familiar.
