At the time of the Fair, the technology was brand spanking new. In fact, it was still being tweaked when the Fair first opened. This type of thing was strictly science-fiction material. Yet, here it was "in the flesh" so to speak! Imagine going to a Fair and seeing a demonstration of a Star Trek type transporter, that actually worked. Or a self-aware android. Then you might have an idea of the wonder of the thing.

The reason I like it so much is because it evokes the original. But when it first opened, it was truly an amazing experience. Disney has tinkered with this show, ripped out huge portions of it, and pretty much have taken most of the humor out of it. So it's not unreasonable for folks to look at what is there now and say "What's the big deal?"
