Obviously, things aren't going great back north for them to want to do this, romantic failures being one of the major causes. Once here, reality sets in--the economy isn't great, it's a very transient town, a certain cynical outlook that comes from working long customer service hours pervades. I think a lot of people respond by throwing themselves into Disney, perhaps because there's not much else. I saw a lot of this in the Adventurers Club--surely the epicenter of this illness--locals who had been down here a year or two and still had nowhere else to go where they felt comfortable.>> Well, first I do not want to take credit for this thread. I didn't start one for a whole lot of reasons. I think it is a fascinating subject, but I'm not sure it would work. I absolutely agree with your comments above, though. People have flocked to Florida for a century. First, it was the weather and beaches and then a lower cost of life (yeah, that was when I was a wee Spirit) and in the last 3-4 decades, the theme parks certainly began to play a factor. Many Floridians are running away from something ... bad relationships, families, businesses that went south, etc. You name it. There's this view that moving to a place with sunshine (although not right now!) and what people in the NE/MW might say is 'better' weather that life will suddenly be better. There's very little sense of community in most communities. I live in a master planned community that didn't even exist when EPCOT was built to give some perspective. People that have lived in Florida since 1977 are still from NYC ... or Boston ... or Philly ... or Trinidad ... or Cuba ... or Venezuela ... or Toledo etc. Then there are the people that think you can live by being on vacation every day. Well, that's impossible and you soon realize that when you are treating EPCOT like the local mall, then you aren't really enjoying it all that much no matter what you tell others. I know a whole generation of 20-somethings who live in O-Town and either work (or have) at the parks (Disney, UNI, SW) and have passes to all of them and are bored out of their minds. They are lonely. They don't do much beyond working and hanging in the parks and I sense they are profoundly sad and lost spirits. If I can get bored with WDW by visiting 3-4 times a year, I can't imagine what people feel walking in them 5-6 days a week. And, no, I don't think that's a healthy way of living. To me, it's a way to actually AVOID living. ~GFC~

And they are taking advantage of OCD fanbois (that is a form of mental illness) by making so many. I know I stated it before, but I couldn't believe when I saw seven of the exact same pins with the green aliens from TS films and the only difference was there was one for every day of the week ... the purpose was very obvious ... no OCD pin collector that likes the TS characters could/would buy one. They'd buy seven. And Disney's MO in pins has been very much like this .. ~GFC~
