I've got a cute younger sister and when we go out, people are always talking to us (to her). It embarrasses her kids that their mom talks to strangers all the time. But, she points out to them, "No, it's not me starting the talking. I'm just being polite by answering them." I don't know why she generates so much interest unless it's the cuteness factor alone.

Normally, I don't talk to strangers when I'm out with my teen. It embarrasses them. I know an 80 year old lady who still talks about how her mom would embarrass by talking to everyone they met on the street (BTW they lived in a small town so they knew everyone on the street). I think, 80 years old and you're still affected by this embarrassment!

I'll admit using DH as a huge crutch in social situations. I don't know what I would do if he passed away....I'm afraid I'd go all hermit crab and everything.

(I think the cuteness factor plays a large part of it.... :)

So, I'm safe here behind my keyboard and screen. In real life......*sigh*.......I'm a big chicken.

I'm not sure if that was the case. I remember reading something about Dahmer telling the police it was a gay domestic dispute and, for reasons unknown but often speculated, the officers did not investigate further. Two of the three officers were fired for their actions that night but were later reinstated.

When our atty became a cop, he was actually on the Green River taskforce.

They are out there among us. :(

I guess working at a PD for so many years has helped enlighten me to the really scary parts of society. And as to what gets into the news....99.9% of what doesn't get into the news...man. I'm just grateful for the *good* work the police do catching the bad guys/girls and I'm grateful the bad cops are few and far between.

OMG. I need to move to England.

I like people. I say "Hi!" to folks. I wave at babies. I "get to know" the clerks at the grocery stores, party stores, gas stations, etc., I frequent. I stop and offer to help people who look lost or puzzled. But -- I'm sorry -- I find that all too often here, strangers barrage other strangers with boring, irritating, self-absorbed noise.

The fact that I was given the airplane seat next to you is NOT a sign from God that I am eager to hear an hour-long monologue about your no-good son-in-law. I'm doing a crossword puzzle on this bus because I enjoy doing crosswords -- not to provide you with an opening for your endless prattle about what YOU like to do for enjoyment. No, I don't want to spend my time in the check-out line hearing your paranoid thoughts about the government. Yes, I WOULD mind if you sit here. No, I do not have a cigarette for you. It's great that you once received a fax from Barbra Streisand -- but shut up, already.

Lest I seem harsh, let me assure you that I always try to find a nice way out. But if that doesn't work, sometimes I'll become as assertive as I need to be to protect my space/silence/thoughts/peace.
