Originally Posted By mawnck >>Do you mean packaging 3D discs without a copy of the 2D with it?<< Yep. The issue being that you can't watch a 3D disc without the glasses, a 3D TV, and a 3D Blu Ray player, which makes the 3D version a very expensive, limited-use item. It would appear that they think that either the "digital copy" version will be adequate, or that there will be enough demand for a separate 3D version to make a double-dip worth it. I think they're clucking fueless, but they run the home video department and I don't. There's a comment on Amazon, BTW, suggesting that one should order the UK 3D edition instead. it comes with a standard 2D Blu Ray, it plays on US machines (note: not verified by yours truly), and is CHEAPER than the US 3D-only version, even after international shipping! Which gives some credence to my theory that they're clucking fueless. A 2D Blu Ray without a DVD can be had on Amazon for $27.99, and a "digital instant video" is $14.99. So you can see where this is heading. But I still don't get it. Why confuse everyone with four different SKUs in the US alone? And $31.50 extra just to get the 3D? (Dear world: Digital instant videos SUCK! They're lower resolution than Blu Ray and are easily lost to computer drive failures, technology upgrades, and the copyright holder just deciding one fine day that they don't want you to watch it anymore. Stop with the digital downloads and stick with physical media! This also applies to the inferior-sounding music in the iTunes store. Rant over.)

Who hasn't had a title vanish from their Netflix queue just because the license agreement expired. I tried Hulu Plus for a month. What a baffling mystery that was - some shows had episodes missing, presumably because the contracts were hammered out prior to online streaming, and some guest star hadn't given consent, or some music license couldn't be obtained. Episodes of Saturday Night Live would be missing whole sketches or musical acts. Some shows were available to stream on my ipad (kinda the whole point of Hulu Plus), but others weren't. No explanation was given. This goes completely against the completist tendencies of today's audiences - completist tendencies the industry helped create and foster by selling complete seasons of TV shows, and by maintaining websites with episode listings and character descriptions. I can't help but wonder, after reaping in massive profits from home video, if the industry isn't regretting it a bit. Remember, prior to the advent of home video, no one would've thought they "owned" a movie. You watched movies at the theater or when they'd play on broadcast TV. Period. No DVR. No VHS, DVD, or blu-ray. Now it seems the industry wants to go back to those days - you don't own the film, you license it from us and watch it once. What'll really be supersweet* is when studios decide they aren't making enough money collecting a licensing fee from Netflix, et al, and they just launch their own streaming sites. Who doesn't want 10 different apps for their TV with 10 different logins? Who doesn't keep track of exactly which studio has the rights to distribute which films? Long-winded rant over. *By supersweet, I mean bloody awful

(They also have the 3D edition for 30 bucks.) (2) Amazon has free shipping, Disney doesn't. (3) I took the word of your post 256, which says DVD, not Blu Ray. A typo perhaps? Just very busy and a bit stressful. >>Hope the vacation is good and at a most excellent, non-Disney locale<< It's a stay-cation, and one of the excellent non-Disney locales I will be visiting is a certain theme park in nearby Anaheim, which I have not darkened the entrance of for at least two years.

I know we were having that discussion somewhere on these boards a few weeks back, but it really hit home in this flick.
