I can't count how many portable calculators/radios/tape players/CD players/cell phones I've destroyed or lost in my lifetime. Why should I shell out big bucks for something that I'm inevitably going to drop or sit on or leave behind on a bus? I'd rather buy something cheaper, knowing I can replace it easily.

It took me a few minutes to find a free third-party app for my Q that plays all forms of video (and most codecs) and music. I'm not saying the iPhone looks like junk - no question it'll be a fine piece of equipment. I just think Steve Jobs (who I like, BTW) manages to garner media attention that isn't always warranted. "More seamless" shouldn't command this much focus.

If you're a fan of Apple and iPod software, then I guess I can see the excitement, but the way Apple portrays it, it's some kind of technological breakthrough; people have been doing this stuff on their PDAs for a while now. >>> If you're not an iPod fan, then I guess you won't see what all the excitement is. Keep in mind that even though you might consider the iPod just another mp3 player, it outsells all other mp3 players COMBINED by more than 2-to-1 even while it's the most expensive product. The iPhone has the same potential, even if there are 20% of the people out there that remain naysayers. If you want to tick down the list of things an iPod can do (play ripped "fair use" music, illegally-downloaded music, or DRM music purchased from an online store) then yes, it's not a unique product. But you're missing the fact that most people do view it as unique, as they've been willing to pay a premium price to get it.

In regards to the Rev A. iBook I have, it still works, it was dropped on concrete bleachers, it surfed carpeted stars, it was puked on (All by my "wonderful" little sister. And it still works. Granted some keys stick, one key flaps, I don't think I'll try to remove the airport card, it has cracks on the handle, a crack above the screen and some dead pixels, but it's still alive. (Granted it has been out of daily use and in storage for years now).

But in all fairness, I've never broken any of my Cell's or PDA's. I have broken portable CD-Players though.
