That studios want to cast him as an extension of himself, and he takes those roles and the giant money bin sized paychecks that come with them, doesn't invalidate the talent he's displayed in other films like Chaplin, The Gingerbread Man, and Zodiac. I see him simliar to Johnny Depp or even Jack Nicholson before them - a very specific personality type that usually does show through in their films, but underneath it, some serious acting chops they've had a chance to showcase in other, smaller films.

In fact for about an hour in the middle of the movie, there is no Iron Man suit used at all. It is a very refreshing take on the superhero movie...

I've retired from Marvel movies after sticking around through the Avengers. They're just not my bag. Too formulaic. Too CGI-heavy. >> But I do think RDJ is a terrific actor. << I dunno if he's terrific. Even in Zodiac (a favorite of mine), he seems to be playing the RDJ-type... Not sure he has any range whatsoever.

Yeah, my five year old noticed the lack of Iron Man on screen and started asking how long the movie was going to take. lol Of course he nearly jumped out of his seat when they had all 12 or whatever of them on the screen at once.

A lot of folks weren't happy with his RDJ-ization of Paul Avery. I thought Zodiac was a typical Fincher movie - overlong and a little too glossy - but everyone acted well in it.
