Although players can be ejected or penalized based on judgement calls by umpires, etc. But I do get your point, that anything based on judging is something other than a true sport. Colleges generally have "athletics" departments, not sports departments. So really it comes down to how you define the word sports vs. athleticism. Here's a chilling challenge: Is this dancing, athleticism or both? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...9hTyLjfM

I love SYTYCD too...I was sooo bummed when Alex got injured. He was freaking incredible! Now that my little geey thing is done, I will agree that dancers are incredible athletes and can actually move their bodies in ways the body is not meant to be moved. But that does not necessarily make dance a sport.

I'm sure a rower and a cheerleader are noth in incredible shape that I will never be able to obtain.

So if you are completely awesome and don't mess up at all, you can still lose, because a judge didn't like your hair or your outfit... Or because a judge had a bad day. Or because... Well... Anything really. Sports are measured by scoring or time. So football, you get 6 points for a touchdown, 3 points for a field goal, etc. If you score more than the other team/guy, you win. There are referees or umpires to enforce the rules and they can sway the game in a certain direction by being baised, making bad calls, or whatnot, but ultimately the score decides. So you may have to overcome the other team AND bad calls, but you can still score more points and win. The refs/umps don't decide the outcome (or aren't supposed to). If a bad call costs you a game, you can always go back and look at the 25 missed free throws, or 2 interceptions and say, if we didn't screw up there, we still would have won, even with that bad call. Competitive eating is a sport. It's measured. You eat more than the others within this time frame, you win. Golf is a sport. You hit the ball in the hole in less stokes than the other guys, you win. It's measurable. Gymnastics in not a sport. If you land with your arm a fraction of an inch lower than an opponent, some judge decides which one was better. There's no measurement or points you can look at to see who won. It's up to judges to score you based on whatever they feel. That's what I think, anyway. I could be wrong. That's not to say that dancing or ice skating or gymnastics isn't competitive or difficult! Or to say that they're not great atheletes. Hell, I'd say more dancers are way MORE athletic than fat drinking bowlers, but bowling is a sport. Dancing isn't.

You think it's easy to grip the ball after eating a slice of pepperoni pizza? To maintain focus after 3 MGDs? To pick up a vicious split while suffering a blast of acid reflux?

Looking back, my father and I spent much more time playing tennis together than dancing. So a sentimental tennis match just may have been more appropriate for us. >>>>A football team gets 6 points for scoring a touchdown. They don't get more for degree of difficulty or how pretty the play was. That's a sport.<<<< I really like that explanation. Not being all that into sports I do not have a real opinion here. My first impulse was to say, yes, of course. But after reading all the comments and opinions I am not sure. FWIW: A game, recreation or pastime, especially one involving physical exercise.
