This restaurant is making me hungry." and that is about it. I was so confused. <And In-N-Out never overly impressed me. It was good for fast food, but it was still just fast food. > >>Same. I don't understand what all the fuss is about.<< Well, I like In-n-Out's hamburgers. A Flying Dutchman is my favorite, and if I am feeling indulgent, I love the vanilla milkshakes (did you know you can get a Neopolitan shake and combine all three flavors!). I do not like their fries, though. I am not a fast food person in general, but we typically stop at the one in Thousand Palms on the drive over. I am less inclined to have to stop since we have a location 2 miles from my house at home, but I still feel like it is part of our California trips.

The first one they opened here in Arizona was a zoo. The lines wrapped around the building and the drive thru was a parking lot. It really isn't THAT good and it isn't quick, but I like that they cook to order so the food is hot and fresh. They will even cut a burger for you if you have a little kid.

Yes, Five Guys burgers may be slightly better, but they also cost twice as much, and you have to actually go into a Five Guys to get them. And I can't think of another chain that does as good a job as In-n-Out of keeping the MBAs from messing with the food. Also … ANIMAL STYLE. Nuff said.) Of course there's no decent barbecue to be had in California, so there's always a trade-off. >>I'll never forget that night we had that epic battle of posting different hilarious Sarah Palin joke picture links<< WE MISS YOU SARAH PALIN! WAAAAAAH! ;-)

The french fries are made from actual potatoes. The burgers are tasty, as are all the ingredients, and the hamburger buns are just right. Also, I first discovered In-n-Out around 1982, when the motel I was staying in on a carless trip to Disneyland was halfway between Knott's and Disneyland (on Brookhurst.) My friend and i ventured out to the little strip mall across the street, never having heard of an In-n-Out Burger before that. We thought they were terrific and went back the next night. I even bought a $4 In-n-Out t-shirt that featured a french fry on a unicycle on the back. Wearing the shirt in the SF Bay Area a few months later, a woman stopped me in the grocery store. "Where did you get that shirt!? Is there an In-n-Out here now!??" That's when i started understanding how popular the chain was in the southland, and happily we now have one right here in my town. In-n-Out does not travel well. By that I mean if someone goes on a burger run and brings the food home, it loses a lot. It's best consumed either in the restaurant or in your car, right away. Not sure why that is.

Even though I've now lived in NY much longer than I lived in SoCal, I grew up there, and it still tastes like home. That's not logical, it's visceral. The last time I flew in to SoCal, I got there at 5:15 PM on a weekday. Not the best time to try to get from LB Airport to Hollywood on the freeways (or any other way). So naturally I asked "Siri, find an In-n-Out near me." She found me an outlet in LB I'd never been to before, not far from the airport at all. Siri earned her keep right there.

Sure the service is a little slow (like everywhere out there), but I've never once regretted eating there!
