Is "Return To Oz" one of the worst films ever made

    True story: Baum lived for a while in my hometown. He'd long since died and his family no longer owned it either, but the house was on my paper route and it was pretty much impossible not to think of him every day as I threw my paper into the yard.

    I agree about the books. For me, they stop being good stories after "The Emerald City of OZ". At least I think that's the one. It's where Dorothy actually brings Aunt Em and Uncle Henry to live with her in OZ (showing, of course, that the original stories never had OZ being a dream). After that book, it took a turn, since it was just a bunch of random characters and quasi-related stories.

    Oh, and I'm guessing that by combining "Ozma of OZ" and "The Land of OZ", Disney avoided having to deal with a pretty interesting plot twist from "Ozma", where she was a boy for the entire book to hide her, and at the end was transformed into a girl to become queen. Don't know if audiences would have been up for that in 1985.

    ORDDU: Oh, I think the audience would have accepted it just as easily as they accept so many other things that come from the magic of movies. It would have actually been better if they HAD followed the original Land of Oz story and left Dorothy out completely because then there wouldn't have been all the comparisons between Fairuza and Judy. Plus there would have been a complete story with a whole new leading character.
