I will agree with you that Gadzuux's statement was an overgeneralization, as not all or even necessarily most Christians feel that way. But I will also agree with Gadzuux's statement in that some specific people calling themselves Christians are actually doing that. However, you made your statement about being discriminated against first, before Gadzuux made that statement, so you were obviously referring to other things, so I'd like to know what examples you are referring to that don't have anything to do with anyone on LP. And I'll admit that I find it a little suspect that you didn't actually answer my question on face value, but simply by quoting what someone else said here. There may be misstatements made by people about Christians, but that doesn't make it discrimination. And yes, maybe it's that semantics thing that various people like to use as an accusation, but I'm a big believer in being specific about choosing one's words. Discrimination has a very definite meaning, and I do think some people throw that word around because it's an attention getter rather than because it's applicable. I'd like to know when you've been discriminated against because you're Christian. I can't say that I've ever experienced that myself, so I'd like to know what you're referring to. Thanks. /cs

Well, that and always being the last kid picked for neighborhood football games when I was growing up... ;-) I certainly don’t go around whining about discrimination though. I’ve always managed to do pretty well in spite of myself! I have read that on average short men make about 10% less for the same job as taller men. That is about the same salary discrepancy as overweight women face. Society does judge people on appearance unfortunately. All you need to do is watch American Idol to see that. Now… back to BOUNCING!!

Even the Usual Suspects are surprisingly silent on this one. Maybe they're all at Disneyland. If the fact that people don't roll over when political "Christians" push intelligent design, Terri Schiavo, abstinence only education, or Merry Christmas down our throats is their definition of descrimination, they need a serious wakeup call. It should come as no surprise that these same people are usually the most indifferent to real descrimination, whether it's gay rights, women's rights, genocide in other nations, etc. The issues where Christians are "descriminated" against are usually made-up issues. Political Christians decide on something, then freak out about it, as if we're all supposed to be outraged. The Merry Christmas issue is the perfect example. People have been saying happy holidays for years without anyone having a stroke over it. All of a sudden, we're supposed to be outraged, and this group wields this as a political weapon against those who don't agree with them, as if no decent human being would ever approve of saying happy holidays. One wonders what issue they'll dream up next to whip their base into a frenzy. A National Bible holiday in place of Martin Luther King Jr. Day? No foreign accents on the Fourth of July allowed? Changing the White House to the Ronald Reagan Mansion, complete with red, white, and blue paint? As always, it'll be goofy, but it's sure to be entertaining.

Then when I say I'm a Christian, I am lumped in with extreme Fundamentalists who make it their life's work to oppress homosexuality. Because of the comments from both Gadzuux and STPH, I find it ironic that they are proving my point. I am a Christian who has not put anyone down, yet you both jump to conclusions without knowing ANYTHING about me other than I am a Christian. cstephens wrote: "Discrimination has a very definite meaning, and I do think some people throw that word around because it's an attention getter rather than because it's applicable. I'd like to know when you've been discriminated against because you're Christian." Read the following definition: "The ability or power to see or make fine distinctions; discernment. Treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit; partiality or prejudice." How have I not been discriminated against by Gadzuux and STPH? They jumped to conclusions by "'Treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit'". Want more examples? Okay cstephens, how about being told that you can not have Sunday's off to go to church (after 14 years of service), being asked what religion you are at an interview (an interview four years ago), not being able to bring up God at work (my husband's job). Not to mention the comments from LPers. NOW tell me that we haven't been discriminated against! STPH said, "and until Gad came along, you hadn't responded at all." Well excuse me if I don't spend 24/7 on the computer. I have a job, and a husband who likes to play on the computer as well. That's why I didn't respond immediately. STPH also wrote: "So pardon me and others for not seeing your point. You're free to be as Christian as you like. Thank your lucky stars you aren't gay, then you'd have yourself a real dilemma." Again, you know nothing about me or my life. Be careful in your conclusions. As for why this thread was started, why are any threads started in WE? To debate of course!
