It is not as if Walt filled the parkinglots with WWII aircraft to show off the characters painted on the planes. The "toon" tie-ins dove tailed with the rides and attractions seamlessly. Now, the "toon" tie-ins seem to be haphazard in some cases. I'm still trying to decide if Stitch is suppose to be about stitch or chili dog smells and sneezes. I could see someone saying the "toon" tie-ins worked great in the 50s and 60s. But, for some odd reason Disneys current batch of imagineers can't seem to get it right. Also sometimes too much is just overkill. When you see Disney's Princess on stuff in Home Depot and Lowe's then go grocery shopping and see Disney's Princesses on everything from breakfast cereal to tissue paper it is overkill and cheapens the overall product.

I just think it might be disingenuous to say it was only the movie the Africa Queen.

Have you ever seen the African Queen? The two have almost no similarities aside from a tramp steamer and one or two shots of stock footage animals in the film. It's not overtly obvious that the Imagineers and Walt got inspired by AQ(not to mention Walt's trip to South America). There's a difference between being inspired by a franchise and beating the guests over the head with synergy.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm, those are television specials by Walt to promote the park when the park didn't rely on Intellectual Tradmark Properties.
