So I don't know how anybody could think the West coast version is better. We just rode that one a month ago and couldn't wait to experience the one in Florida again because it's so much better.

WDW's may have been updated in the 90's, but boy has the luster worn off since then. Really couldn't care less that the story is told in chronological order, either. I've always found the Fantasyland dark rides work best when they attempt to recreate the atmosphere of the movie (Pan, Pooh, Mr. Toad) and not strictly retell the story (Pinnochio, Snow White, and Little Mermaid, I fear).

The most popular FL dark rides didn't rely on retelling their movie stories. Just look at Pan--it gives you the atmosphere of the film, but isn't bogged down by following the movie's story too closely.

With that huge space back there, why didn't they add another dark ride on the other side of Mermaid?

They do (finally) ... and they won't. UNI is actually dictating the cost of admission in O-Town for the first time. Recently, while in Asia, I talked with some folks who had been to Uni's new Singapore park and enjoyed it a lot. But they really wanted to come to FLA to 'see the park with Harry Potter'. (these people also passed on going to HKDL as part of a family vacation). Not trying to be a downer at all, just realistic. It's so sad that Disney feels 'we have a different clientele and our guests expect less from us ... and we're only too happy to deliver ... have you seen our 1972-era eletrical parade or our new 6:20 Studios parade now showing with half the entertainers?' Talking to a friend earlier today, there was one positive we could both agree on with this underwhelming and expected news and that is in three years the MK is going to look much nicer ... well, at least one land will. ~Hi-Ho Silver~

"I don't think they realize yet that they need to compete with Universal." They've been competing with Universal since it fist opened back in 1988. The only thing that has changed recently is the addition of Harry Potter, and like anything, it has a limited shelf life. Unless Universal can continue churning out more attractions at that level, which I seriously doubt it will, it's a bit premature to suggest that the marketplace in Orlando is shifting in Universal's favor over the long term.
