If you have ever read Uncle Tom's Cabin, which by the way was written during slavery in the South, you get a real picture of how racism really began concerning blacks and whites, and how it existed throughout the entire country. This is EXACTLY what RoadTrip has hit on.

I always assumed (like you jonvn) that it was not only a little worse, but FAR worse in the south. I grew up here. However, during the mid-90's I moved to Nebraska for 4 years.

During that time I was shocked to learn just how different (Trippy's example) racism was there. Different, but still the same too...after all discrimination is just that no matter if it's "in your face" or still worse IMHO "behind your back."

It is ridiculous to claim that racism is worse in the south than anywhere else in the country. It simply isn't true.

However in the south just 35-40 years ago, probably yes, it was far worse here, but not today.

Sorry. But the perception of southerners is what is said in post 39. And you KNOW that to be the case, because you came up with all those stereotypes without me having to voice them here.

I would say right now, around here, that there is a good deal of animosity towards the southern part of the country due to their support of Bush in the election, and the religious extemism that is often seen there.

You might want to ask yourself why people seem to feel that way. Is it just ignorance? Could be, or could there be something actually to it?

My last trip to the south landed me in North Carolina. I flip on the TV set, and there is this one channel that seemed to put out nothing but junk about the Civil War. Seems like a lot of people down there are still angry about it.

    Kind of strange to me.

I think it is more open and more an accepted behavior and just tolerated.

It's behind your back in places like Nebraska (feh) than the south because at least in Nebraska, they are a bit shameful of their attitudes. Not that they don't have them.

In the South, you get stuff like what Carter wrote. Is it any better for it to be right in your face as opposed to behind your back?

The perception of the south is that it is filled with slack jawed yokels. Any time anyone in the entertainment business is to be portrayed as an idiot, they have a southern accent. Anytime you see some rednecked moron spouting epithets they are either from the south, or are some sort of religious freak that is based somewhere in the south. Or so it seems.

It doesn't play well. And while most people will be like the nebraskans and not say it right to your face, I don't have a problem saying it directly.

I will admit one thing, though: The women I've seen from Alabama are absolutely some of the cutest. What is it about that state that makes these girls pop up from there? It's enough to make me want to move there, if I wasn't afraid of a cross being burnt on my lawn.

What argument that I have made do these figures pertain to? I don't see the correlation. Please explain.

    Oh, I see.

You know, this sort of ignores about the last 50 or so years of history, where black people have fled the area in the millions....

Well, if you see it in a TV show or a movie, it must be true.

Of course, the entertainment business used to do such an accurate portrayal of blacks (reacting in clownish, childlike ways when frightened, happy and grateful to be in the subserviant service of white people), then there's no possible way their portrayal of most southerners as 'slack jawed yokels' could be in any way related to an east coast/west coast snobbery and sterotyping.

Yep, the entertainment biz. Creating an accurate picture of America for more than 100 years.â„¢

    I've always thought so.

I was referring to what the general perception was, not that I am convinced by something if it is on TV. And that if you have someone on TV with a southern accent, it telegraphs to the audience "yokel."

"an east coast/west coast snobbery and sterotyping"

Of course it is. But it is a snobbery that gets validated when you look at some of the politics coming out of the region as well.

That is why I'm all in favor of global warming. Minnesota gets warmer and the coasts drop into the sea. What could be better?
