But Aristocats? Whod'a thunk they'd ever get a 2-disc set?

I still don't intend to replace my single discs with doubles, except for Great Mouse Detective and Black Cauldron. Those would be my must-haves.

They missed the 20th for MOUSE DETECTIVE. My guess is BLACK CAULDRON won't get the special treatment unless they remake it in live-action (which should be done). My hope is that the stuff Katzenberg cut out still exists somewhere, and that the film is reconstructed. It could be a better movie, with some new animation and those scenes restored. Not a LOT better, but better.

ORGOCH: Oh, yeah? She been lettin' herself go lately, too? Startin' ta look like some old hag with warts 'n no teeth? If so, then sign her up!

I bet it can't be Pinocchio because the film buffs are still arguing with the marketing weenies over what to do with 4x3 movies on BluRay - show them correctly, or fill the widescreen by any means necessary.

    (2) I believe the previous Jungle Book DVD was 4x3. The new one is widescreen. In this case, you get more picture from the 4x3, since the widescreen was created by cropping the 4x3 original, but both are correct. The movie was designed to be shown either way. Widescreen for theaters (cropped by the projectionist), or 4x3 for TV broadcasts.

    (3) Does anybody know if 1.78:1 is the correct ratio for Jungle Book widescreen? It looks a bit TOO cropped to me, like maybe they actually had 1.66:1 in mind. I wish I still trusted Disney to get these things right . . . .

    (4) I hope they don't keep tossing out old extras in favor of new ones. I prefer the ones produced when some of the key folks who made the movie were still alive. Andreas Deja is a great guy, but **he wasn't there**.

There's another format called HD-DVD which does the same thing, but is different. You can't play BluRay discs on an HD-DVD or vice versa. Some studios are only putting out movies on HD-DVD. Disney is only putting out movies on BluRay.

Confused yet? Get this. There are some HD-DVD discs that also work on a regular DVD player (with regular DVD resolution). They're specially marked, and they cost more. There's no equivalent to this with BluRay.

There's one crystal ball on the market, from LG, that plays *all* these discs, but not with the full feature set. The dual-format LGs cost a lot of kroner, often more than just buying one of each separately. More and better such dual players should be out in time for Christmas.

But yes, all these newfangled players will do a fine job of playing your DVD collection, probably better than the crystal ball you have now.

PS - Who's your favorite elephant in The Jungle Book? Mine's Winifred.

Oh, and I really don't get the Sleeping Beauty release. How much better is the platinum edition going to be than the great 2-disc set it already had 4 years ago? Pinocchio is begging for a platinum release, since that film has only ever been out on that "limited issue" featureless DVD in 1999....sigh.

Oh, and what I wouldn't give for a 2-disc treatment of The Black Cauldron! I think I would pass out from amazement that it happened. Heck, I was even amazed that it showed up on video at all!

We got our Jungle Book at Costco. It comes with 3 collectible trading pins. :)

May I give a shout out to King Louie/Louie Prima? That is just a sensational part of the movie...what a talent. And I love the animation of Bagheera...that kitty jaw just slays me... :)

Whoa, that sounds pretty weird. But when I remember the dog I used to have, I not only can picture how she looked, but my hands can remember how she felt.

That's what Bagheera "feels" like when I watch him.

Finally got around to watching everything on disc 1, and since I'm always on here grousing about the DVDs, it's only fair that I give this one a shout-out. Very nice job overall. I'm especially delighted with the quality of the video. Those of you who thought the new editions of The Little Mermaid or Peter Pan looked OK, please do a comparison, and you should see what we've been moaning about. (Peter Pan = excessive digital scrubbing that makes it look too "digital", Little Mermaid = just an overall dark-and-nasty-looking transfer.) On this, the color's nice, and the picture's sharp and clean, but still film-like. Do more like this.

The commentary track is good too. My fear that the makers of the movie would be shortchanged by excessive "ooh look how good that animation is" from the new guys was unfounded. There was plenty of that too, but it was nicely counterbalanced by the archival stuff.

Now the grouses: Not too keen on the "vertical pan-and-scan". (I guess that would technically be a "pedestal-and-scan"?) I recognize the various reasons for it, but if I ran the world, they would also provide the flick in the original negative aspect ratio of 1.37:1. For that portion of the constituency who are interested in this stuff, y'know. I hope that's what they have in the works for BluRay releases, hint hint.

And if they must do it widescreen, how about doing it in the *correct* theatrical ratio instead of the *TV* one? They've done plenty of DVDs in 1.66:1 in the past, why stop now?

On the deleted songs - why didn't they make some teensy little effort, just ANY effort at all, to restore them? There are $25 shareware products that, if wielded by someone who understood the basics of sound restoration, could've effectively taken care of most of that mess in about 20 minutes. We don't need stereo surface noise to prove they're authentic acetates.

Finally, a pox on those responsible for the Jonas Brothers song and video. (1) What's the point? (2) How can you sleep at night?

Some observations: Am I the only one who noticed that's Thurl Ravenscroft singing the demo version of the Bare Necessities? And he and the rest of the Mellowmen on the other tracks?

And as a musician, I can't consider *that* Bare Necessities to be the same song as the other Bare Necessities, other than a few lyrics in the second verse. Would I be correct in assuming that Gilkyson rewrote the song to something closer to its current form prior to the Sherman Brothers coming on board? Anybody know the story here?

Finally, that can't possibly be Bill Lee singing Shere Kahn's low note, can it? I don't think he could hit that note on his worst day. It's either Thurl or George Saunders. It wouldn't be the first time that an expert or participant has been mistaken in a commentary track. I recall reading that George always insisted he sang it himself, and it sure doesn't sound like Thurl to me. Ok, maybe it IS Bill Lee?
