At the time, it was not known by the general public that Navajo was used as code during WWII. (There was speculation they might want to use it again if war broke out, so it was very hush hush). But one of the elders told us flat out about having done it, and it was fascinating. He asked us not to talk about it, and we didn't. It only became public knowledge years later. Back OT, Malden was one of those underrated characters actors who was never bad and usually terrific. He was also married over 70 years to the same woman. The obit in the paper today says his real name was "Mladen Sekulovich" (Czech/Serb), and he managed to get minor characters to be named "Sekulovich" in "On the Waterfront," "Patton," "Birdman of Alcatraz" and "Streets of San Francisco" too!
