The original word used to describe Hell, Gehenna, referred to a rubbish heap in a valley outside of Jerusalem where the city's waste and offal were burned. I think the more dramatic version that we think of today isn't accurate to what was being described at the time. Instead of a lake of fire and eternal torment I believe that they were talking about oblivion. Only later, after Christ, does the idea of eternal damnation arise.

Originally Posted By ecdc >>Wait a second, according to Mormon belief Hitler gets to go to heaven?<< Not really. Mormons believe in a three-fold heaven and no hell. The most faithful will go to the Celestial Kingdom, then others will go to the Terrestrial Kingdom, and finally the "lowest" heaven is the Telestial Kingdom. Mormons believe that even within these groups there are other levels. The closest thing to hell in Mormonism is outer darkness. A banishment of sorts for those who deny Christ. Hitler would most likely not fit there, and he would end up in the Telestial Kingdom. Mormon paintings show Joseph Smith translating the gold plates to the Book of Mormon as if he were studying them and praying about it. In reality, he stuck his seer stone in his hat and stuck his face into it to block out the light. The gold plates were not present most of the time. A great episode of South Park.
