Wow. I completely disagree. I mean, I think the writers were having a lot of fun throwing random things at us - oh my god it's a polar bear!!! - but I don't think it was ever their main focus. I think the MEDIA found it easier to describe the show in terms of its quirkiness, and so THAT became the focus of watercooler conversation. But never for a second do I think that their main goal was just to blow our minds.

This morning I found myself repeating what I've been saying since season one - I don't care about the 'secrets,' I care about the people. I loved the island backstory episode so much NOT because it gave new information about the island but because it was the story of two brothers and their doomed relationship. That's interesting.

Years ago everyone was asking, "What's in the hatch????" That's all people seemed to care about. The characters were always 50 times more interesting than any question to be revealed. They really were the greatest collection of characters I've ever seen assembled for a tv show, and that's what the final episode was about.

The more I think about the finale, the more I love it. Most people at my work were saying last week, "If they don't explain what the yellow light is, I'll be peeved." I find that weird. Who cares? Even if you knew, what difference would that have made to the story? I would have been peeved if we hadn't gotten closure on these characters. But we did. So I'm satisfied.

    >Instead, it turns out the passengers of Oceanic 815 are all dead, victims, if the end-credit imagery is to believed, of the same tragic plane accident that started the whole thing. Six seasons of polar bears, bachelor pad hatches, landlocked ships, personal submarines and a fleet of fallen airplanes, and it was all apparently some sort of shared afterlife experience.<<<

This person clearly had no Idea what was going on and apparently wasn't paying attention. In the original time line THEY ARE NOT ALL DEAD. It is in the flash-sideways where they are dead, hence why Jack's father told him they were dead IN THE FLASH SIDEWAYS TIMELINE, not in the original one. The island was real the hatch was real, the dharma, initiative was real, and everything we saw from season 1 to 5 was real. Another thing that proves this is the question "Why would they have a flash sideways timeline if they were all dead?"

This is an excerpt from Lostpedia, a fantastic site that has great theories and explanations.

"The main characters created a collective flash-sideways timeline after they died. Much like the island itself, this timeline let them reflect on their lives and revisit past choices. Near-death experiences in the timeline helped characters recall some memories of their lives, and connecting with loved ones let them remember fully. Ultimately, they used the timeline to meet one another, people from the "most important part of their lives" - their time on the island - so they could "move on" into the afterlife."

    I weep for Mary McNamara.

Hence why boone died in season one and jack died in the last episode but they ended up in the same place. Its weird how somepeople think that a purgatory exists at a certain time.

Like 24 did for the most of its run. But network tv will no longer be the place for that. Instead I will have to look to HBO(I need to watch the Wire) , FX(Ditto Damages and Justified is great) and AMC(Mad Men still need to watch seasons 2 and 3, Breaking Bad, bought the first two seasons based on my viewing of the first two episodes).
