California has many world class destinations - Los Angeles, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Napa Valley, San Diego. These are places that are unique and people from all over the world visit. Not exactly like the shot in Cars, but nonetheless a desert waterfall. The idea that Radiator Springs could be in CA is not NEARLY the stretch of some of Disney's other theming choices (as you've acknowledged). The concept art looks VERY CA-desert, especially the "little town on Route 66" architecture.

I still like Disneyland way better, but I'm not sure that they could have built anything that anyone would have liked better than Disneyland.
