Just looking at the average person's revealed preference for risk in all types of activities, someone carrying a concealed weapon at a theme park falls within our normal levels of tolerance.

I would respect the property owner's preference for a ban of any length, from one day to forever. After learning of what the consequence was in this case, I think it is entirely appropriate.

I'm not okay with irresponsible gun owners. I am fine with responsible gun owners. If someone demonstrates carelessness of the kind in this incident, I think it should result in some kind of punishment, if not from Disney (who is asking for trouble not enforcing their own very sensible ban on guns on property), then certainly from those in charge of approving concealed carry permits.

I don't think people should get to be sloppy with a gun in this manner. That is not responsible gun ownership. A large number of gun deaths result from this sort of lack of attention. People shouldn't have to worry about misplaced loaded guns on Disney theme park rides any more than they should aboard an aircraft. That's not an acceptable risk, and it is entirely avoidable.

I know this was said in jest, but Orlando actually is a pretty bad place when it comes to violent crime.

Some parts of the metro region are worse than others, obviously.

    Not definitive proof, but:

You are so right Sara. Regardless of ones stand on guns and gun control, there should be no difference in opinion about this. Right to carry, no right to carry isn't even part of the question. The question is...Should anyone, not on official duty, visiting as a guest ever have any reason to bring a loaded and unsecured weapon to a place like Disney?

There is not any logical answer to that question other than a loud and totally unanimous, resounding NO! There is no justification, not even suspicion of need, nothing but a person that has absolutely no ability to determine what should be happening at any given time. It's not a question of gun control, it's more of an exercise in just how stupid and careless one person can get.

It's up to the property owner. They already prohibit firearms in their theme parks and resorts. If you do bring a weapon, the proper procedure is to check it in with security before entering, but I don't know how accurate that is.

But for some carrying a weapon is entirely normal and since they do not believe they are dangerous, they see no reason to check their weapon. However, the defiant will continue to carry unless Disney institutes metal detectors at park entrances. Many, many conceal carry advocates have posted that they carried at Disney World for a week and were never found out. Here's an example of such a thread: http://smith-wessonforum.com/c...rry.html

It's hard to know how many carry at Disney resorts and theme parks, but there must be a not insignificant amount and I don't hear of any incidents involving legal gun owners hurting people. Actually, the parks have had a more sordid history with knife attacks. Ask Mel Yorba.

Six Flags Magic Mountain put in metal detectors because they had a problem with illegal carry, most notably by guests affiliated with gangs, not legal gun owners. Los Angeles County also has very strict gun control. Go figure.

Must not? "Might" not. People posted anonymously to a gun lovers website isn't really proof of anything, other than some gun lovers like to brag and boast.

I am not sure how many people do carry at Disney World. For those that do, what do you propose to stop them? It doesn't seem like a big deal to get kicked out for the day. Even if they were kicked out for life, it would be a badge of honor for them.

Then I'd like Disney to award more badges of honor. See? Win/win. Careless gun owners banned thereby reducing the likelihood of a tragedy, and they get to feel wonderful about being banned. I knew we'd figure it out.
