Avast, ye landlubbers! Let it be known that the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction will be in dry dock from March through June in order to swab the decks for an enhanced piratin' adventure. Not to worry, though, matey. The same motley crew of buccaneers will still be raidin' and pillagin', just like old times. (After all, this be the last attraction personally captained by Walt Disney himself, an' no one wants to cross the cap'n.) Tho', if ye keep yer eyes and ears open, ye might catch a few new surprises when it sets sail again!

What does irk me a bit is this need Disney seems to have to wring every last drop out of something successful and to spread it far and wide in an attempt to garner more business. The cheapquels have gotten so out of hand that they're actually making things like Lion King 1 1/2 now. They can't even just stick with 2 or 3.

Ah well. I fairly minor complaint. I love Pirates and suspect these changes will in no way damage the ride experience for me.

As for Davy Jones, the most logical place for him to inhabit would be the caverns in the ride's prologue.

Tweaks and changes to rides don't really trouble me as long as they make sense.

Hope the ride is good. :)

There is a small boat in there that I am sure was never there before with a dark maroon colored sail and a jolly roger flag. Also, it seems like I spotted some small additions as well in small previously unused spaces, but it could just be that I never paid attention to them before. A CM in the pieces of eight shop told me that it will close as well on Sunday and when they reopen with the ride the store will be much larger and carry mostly merchandise from the movie, which they have a ton of already.

I am going again on Sunday. I live within walking distance, so I just have to go for one of the final rides through it the way I remember it from my childhood.

And as much as I love Pirates, I have to believe that 99.5% of the paying guests probably fall into that same category as my friends I described above.

The vast majority of paying customers will really enjoy what they are about to do to that wonderful ride.

I'm with those Walt Disney followers that say he would have most likely replaced/majorly changed Pirates decades ago had he lived. For example, in the early 1960's, not many years after the park opened, Walt had Marc Davis rework the Jungle cruise from a semi-serious expedition to a much more toung-in-cheak comedy ride.

What I object to is the the last decade when they close things without replacement, let things fall into disrepair, or as is in the case of the Pooh ride, they take out what in its day was a major "E" Ticket class attraction and replace it with a lackluster simple dark ride. My objections to DCA are not that they added to DL, it was the lackluster park they built.

As long as they are improving the park, as a Disneyland loyalist, I am for it.

You can see the non-concerned attitude of those who respect nothing.

You can also see the true artists who have passion and understand the value of life, and the true value of all toil is not money, but our love of god and our respect for our creators.

    A. No one is suggesting destroying Disneyland.

    B. Walt never expressed a sentiment remotely like this.

    C. Things can just as easily be destroyed by a "make-no-changes" attitude that leads to benign neglect.

And that would be my two cents worth.

I say .. 'the jury is still out on this one'. I'll have to wait till Geoffrey Rush, and Johnny Depp AAs are installed .. and see for myself.

After going on it for years .. and litterally hundreds of times ... each time the journey was subject to my own interpretation. This is the element where PoC was "interactive". It was a subtle form of "interactivity"... before interactivity with DLR attractions became the fashion in the 90s.

I would use my own imagination to 'fill in the rest'. And that's what made it so stimulating for me for years. Now .. there will be a more concise story to follow. So now .. my mind will take more of a "back seat" .. and watch from a more 'passive' point of view .. than "engaging" it.

    Subtle enhancements are always welcomed.

Story/plot changes are another .. and make me nervous with the most brilliantly executed attraction in Disney theme park history.

So .. until the debut June 24 ... I'm apprehensive!

    And I'm with Cogsworth ;) ...

"If it's not broke, why fix it?" ;~

Not really. The Tiki Room hasn't changed for a far longer time than pirates, but it's still pretty popular with the regulars and locals. The reason why being that it generates nostalgia. It's a classic.

When an attraction reaches that kind of status you have to be very careful with how exactly you go about changing or updating it. I'm definitely not against updating pirates, to bring the technology up to current standards, or to add more special effects...

... BUT on the other hand, I disagree with the idea to integrate characters and themes from the movies into the attraction because from my POV, it's like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. POTC the attraction is set in a certain kind of world with certain kind of characters. It's more of a realization of a cartoonish pirate world, where all the pirates wore bright colored clothing that was always clean and used words like avast, or ye hearties. That's part of the charm of POTC for me - cause it's like a look back on how people of Walt's day saw pirates.

The movie on the other hand is just more modern and geared more to adults and teenagers than to the whole family. Not that there's anything wrong with that... it just shows how they're two different genres altogether.

I think speaking for myself, generally POTC the attraction will end up losing something by adding the characters from the movie. The more you add and the more you modernize an attraction, the farther away it gets from that classic attraction everyone loved, and in the case of POTC I wonder if that wouldn't mean someday soon, it's removal wouldn't necessarily be as shocking a possibility as it is now.
