But I'll probably wait till the other 3 come out so I can compare and decide which ones I want. I'll probably want all 4. But probably won't be able to justify BUYING all 4. :)

But I have to warn those people who are ordering "sight unseen" - this book it short and full of HUGE beautiful artwork. But there are no "real" photos. I rate it a 7 on a 10 point scale. The Nickel Tour is an 11 (for those who want a comparison.)

Last July, Tim O'Day, Bruce Gordon and Jeff Kurtti spoke about their books. Tim wrote the "Then, Now and Forever" Jeff wrote the "Art of Disneyland" Bruce assisted with the selections and layout for both. They had slides for their books, and I took pictures the best I could.

And I wrote a trip report about their seminar for another board

    ***
Earlier in the week, someone asked if there would be a moderator for this seminar. The NFFC organizer said there wouldn't, and then got a look of panic on their face when they realized what that meant. Any one of these guys is uncontrollable when they are alone on stage, no one knew what would happen when all three of them are together.

Bruce Gordon's name you might recognize, he is an Imagineer and has made quite a little name for himself doing layouts and text for a lot of the fabulous Disney history, and biographies that have been coming out recently. The Nickel Tour, the Sherman Bros, Herb Ryman, Peter Ellenshaw.

Jeff Kurtti and Tim O'Day are primarily writers. Jeff wrote the "Since the World Began: WDW's first 25 years," Tim has put together most of the recent souvenir books for DL and writes for the Disney Magazine.

Next year, there will be what looks like two fabulous books released for DL's 50th anniversary. Tim and Bruce are working on "50 Years of Happiness: Disneyland Then, Now and Forever" which will be the souvenir book produced for the 50th. A lot of it focuses on DL then, mostly tomorrowland. DCA is in the back of the book, which annoyed people because they wanted to see more of it throughout the book. Bruce said, "Well that's because it hasn't had much of a then...(pause wondering if he should say it)...it doesn't have much of a now...(pause, wondering if he should keep going)...and it probably doesn't have much of a future. At this point, Tim and Jeff move their chairs as far away from Bruce as they can. Bruce said, "But of course I'm only kidding." [NOT!]

Julie Andrews wrote the introduction to the book, Tim did the writing, Bruce did the design. And instead of doing the traditional chronological approach, or even a land by land approach, the decided to tackle DL from a point of emotional themes. So there is a chapter called dreams, another called tradions, surprises, adventure, fun, thrills and secrets. And then Tim made a comment that the last part of the book [you guys remember what that was] is dissapointment. After he said it, Jeff moved his chair away from Tim, Tim moved his closer to Bruce's and then said, "But I am only joking."

They did have a slide show showing the pages, I took a few pictures of the screens, those will be coming later.

A few other tidbits that they threw into their presentation: DL's Buzz will be closer to Tokyo's Buzz, not WDW's. This is when Bruce made his comment about watching the sub lagoon in August. And Bruce mentioned his new book that he is working on which is a tribute to Wally Boag and the Golden Horseshoe Revue. He shared a story, that while Wally Boag was working in a show in England and during one of the skits they get an audience member to get up on stage and sing with the cast, and the audience member, who is a plant, blows them away with their beautiful voice. The audience member was an about 12 year old girl, and it was Julie Andrews. Also if you want to see a really great exhibit about Disneyland's 50th anniversary you will have to head to Dearborn, Michigan because the Henry Ford Museum will be putting on a great one.

Then they moved on to talking about Jeff's book. It finally occured to Disney Editions (the publishing company) that they had never done an "Art of Disneyland" coffee table type book, and that people might like one. So that's what Jeff's book will be. He's doing the writing and Bruce, once again, is doing the design.

A reoccuring theme among writers, Peggy Van Pelt talked about this as well, whenever Disney Editions would complain that the text was too technical and not interesting, they'd shove as much of that into the captions for the pictures, which for some reason made it okay.

Jeff shared another "difficulty" with the publishing of the book. Most of the art is long and narrow. Not really appropriate for the standard 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. So his great idea was that they would just print some of the artwork turned 90 degrees. So you'd have the normal sized book, and periodically you'd see that the art was sideways and you'd turn the book to look at it correctly. Apparently, management thought that their readers would not be able to figure out that they needed to turn the book, or that people might tear the pages out of the book while trying to look at these pages. And the publisher was concerned about the added printing costs (you all know how easy it is to print something landscape instead of portrait, right). Well, eventually sanity prevailed. So everyone, remember to turn your books sideways at the appropriate times.

He also showed some pages from the book, most of it is turning out to be Tomorrowland. After Jeff pulled the art he wanted to use, he had Bruce through out anything that everyone has seen 1000 times. They really wanted to get the stuff that people maybe haven't seen already.
