But then all of us here are pretty up to speed on what Cars Land will look like and what it will offer. I'm sure there are more casual Disney fans that looked at that and thought "Geez, that's no big deal. It looks barren." It's unusual to see Disney release so much unfinished information on stuff yet to open. You have to wonder who they believe the audience is for that kind of material.

The look of Eric's Castle and nearby rocks in the movie was fairly two-dimensional and rather basic, thus the theme park interpretation of it is the same. But, the Cars Land rockwork looks a hundred times more detailed and impressive and lifelike. I have looked at it up close from Pacific Wharf, and it's very, very impressive. The pictures of the other parts of the land look even more mindblowing. Mount Prometheus in DisneySea is similarly awe inspiring when you walk around it and look up at it at close distance. If the same guy is in charge of Cars Land, it's now making a lot of sense why the mountains there look so fantastic.

Totally different scope and scale on the Cars Land thing (in that it's MASSIVE), and the intricacy of the rockwork and surfacing makes it even more amazing. The Mermaid building will be very pretty, I'm sure. But it's just a much different type of facility on a much smaller scale. A shame they couldn't plus up the rockwork just a bit, even if there wasn't much detail shown in the 1989 movie footage of Eric's castle and surrounding geography.

Yep, I can see why you might assume that Cars Land's might not be up to the same level at as HP based on what you're seeing at Mermaid. In Mermaid's defense the rockwork looks appropriate for the film it is based on and the type of ride that it is. That said, it does appear that the Imagineers went above and beyond with the Cadillac Range.
