I remember a few years ago being at DL and Splash, Mansion and Space were all closed at the same time. There wasn't a line out the door at City Hall looking for freebies. It was in January, but still ... And WDW does have FOUR parks. It encourages a park-hopping, bigger is better mindset ... so big deal ... one major attraction in one park is closed this summer for MUCH-needed care. As for kids ... well, I'll repeat this often told Spirit anecdote about being at the MK in either 1979 or 1980 and finding Space Mountain, Pirates, 20,000 Leagues and Peter Pan all closed for the day. I wasn't happy. But I survived. And that was with one park. And I was just a wittle spirit in dem days. Didn't hate a single Disney exec yet!

MK is not getting any younger and the amount of rehabs are going to continue to go up every year if they want to keep that park up to snuff. Look how many rehabs they have to do at DL every year. I hope that this is truly the beginning of a bunch of major rehabs at the park that has been rumored for awhile.

It gets a routine manitenence during the off season, but since the big lawyer mandated overhaul a few years ago, it hasn't had any "break downs." >>DL, seems to be under constant refurb's for major attractions but they don't complain here on the forum like the WDW folks do.<< I would venture at least three reasons this is true: 1. Most DL refurbs take place during the off season. Since WDW really has no "off season," this isn't possible. 2. DL has more attractions than any other Disney theme park. Even when there are three or more attractions down, the count is still pretty high. 3. DL has a very large base of APs. They are less inclined to complain about refurbs, since they know they will get to catch the closed attraction the next time around. (This also frees up time to complain about really important stuff, like a temporary shortage of metal utensils at the Plaza Inn or the change in color of the hitching posts on Main Street.)

One ride you couldn't hear the GH, next ride he was blaring you. ONe ride it was sooo dark you couldn't see anything, next ride it was way too light! It was so bad that in the graveyard you could see the pop up ghosts, but they were popping up...audio wasn't working one time ni the graveyard, either. Scrims are torn and messy. Half of the effects don't work. The audio in the stretchrooms was non-existent. The lights came on BEFORE the thunder/lightning effect in the stretchrooms. Wallpaper torn all over the place. Picture of Gracey in the foyer not turned on at all. It was jsut plain sad.

Almost every guest is park-hoppping, and even those who aren't have loads to do since they are usually first-timers or non-regulars.

So likely, those of us locals at WDW will get the shaft again, just like the lousy refurb at POTC.

Maybe it was just the fact that I grew up in Southern California and watched as attractions at Disneyland grew and evolved over the years. But when I moved to Orlando for five-and-a-half years and made the “other†Magic Kingdom my new home park, I was just disappointed when far too often it seems like the Orlando management was just too arrogant to care about the classic attractions. They felt that every guest coming to WDW would visit the Magic Kingdom regardless of what was done to the park, so they ignored the Magic Kingdom’s problems and failings in favor of focusing on the rest of the resort. I’ve reported on this in the past and it’s been documented here and elsewhere about how WDW management tried to avoid improving Pirates along with Disneyland’s version, but were overturned by the corporate office. In turn, we’ve seen the corporate eye has realized what a sorry state the MK attraction were in, and have begun the many upgrade and refurbishment projects listed here. Unfortunately for the Haunted Mansion, it looks like the cost cutters may have won out again while John Lasseter is busy focusing on Disneyland’s new attractions. Local spies tell us that while the Haunted Mansion will be closed for virtually the entire summer season, most of the upgrades and rehabs approved in the budget will make this a mostly “technical†upgrade to the attractions audio and lighting systems due to the poor state of the existing systems. Most of the scenic and themed improvements have been cut from the budget including some kind of huge new addition planned for the graveyard. The plans to rebuild a completely new entrance queue and exit area has also been canned in favor of a more budget conscious expansion to just the exit. The good news is that I’m told the ballroom scene will look great when the ride reopens because the plan to refurbish and replace much of the scene did manage to survive the budget cuts. Now if only someone could get Lasseter out of the Sub Lagoon in California long enough to take a look at what’s really going on in Florida, maybe there is still time to add a few more enhancement dollars to the Mansion." If this is true I really don't know what to say anymore about WDW management that doesn't involve alot of expletives deleted.

Getting rid of my beloved "eyes" wallpaper? (unless by "new" they just mean newer prints of that) Retiring the distinctive and hauntingly elegant Eleanor Audley? Ugh... Why do they have to make changes to everything? First Pirates, now Mansion. IMO part of the charm and love for these classic attractions is that they have been unchanged (though "kept up" is of course a desire) for decades, since their debuts. It may be a refurb, but for people like me who treasure those little classic details, it sounds like it's going downhill...
