Just so we're clear on some details, oh sweet, pitiable Laura: You had, back in 2000, two young, party-riffic twentysomething daughters, you were, for better or worse, the default role model for women everywhere, you were the emblem for female freedom and feminine empowerment to a hundred nations, and you... did what now? Lied outright? Lived in quiet denial? Slaughtered your own core beliefs? Kept your second-class Southern wife mouth shut tight and sat by quietly while the men did the "real" thinking? You sacrificed your own daughters to the sweaty altar of Karl Rove and the fundamentalist anti-choicers? I see. Oh sweet Laura, it is very likely you are going to hell.

Laura Bush may not be as "political" as a lot of us. She may not be so invested in her pro-choice or pro-gay marriage views that it's worth it to her to cause her husband grief. Like it or not, we all make those kinds of calls. Also known as, Why I don't talk about religion at my in-laws

I disagree with Wife about her extreme born-again right wing Christian fundamentalist "I send money to Pat Robertson" ways but I'm not going to embarrass her among others at a Bible study or in front of the entire congregation by voicing up that I am agnostic at heart. Staying on the sidelines or keeping quiet is a better approach for smooth interpersonal relations. She puts up with me and I have to put up with things I find disturbing(such as her faith ways)--- that is the way marriage is at times. But I will not contradict/embarrass her in public. Assuming she cared for and respected her man Laura Bush did the right thing.

I've got to believe that Laura isn't all that passionate about LGBT or abortion rights, otherwise we would have heard about this long before she had a book to peddle. The columnist is right; she's a doormat.

I know parents aren't by any means the same as spouses, but I *have* called my Mom out before when I felt she was making racist comments. So, yes, if I disagree with something I hear and feel that someone is unnecessarily denigrating another person's race or sexual orientation, then I *will* call them on it. Every time. I don't care WHO it is. Wrong is wrong, regardless who says it.
