    That's good stuff!

1-5. Haunted Mansion. So cool, still. The fact that it relies on humor and chills rather than crude scares is what makes it wear so well. The ballroom scene is the single greatest scene in a Disney attraction; creepy, romantic, funny, sad, existential (in the form of the duelers doomed to repeat their futile fight for eternity), and funny all at the same time.

1-5. Pirates. A masterpiece of environmental design. Brilliant in the unstated way it moves from the world of the living (bayou) to the world of the dead (skeletons) to the world of the living dead (AA's), like a fever dream. (And the reason I prefer it to DLP's, not to mention WDW's cliff notes version).

1-5. Peter Pan. Say it's merely blacklit painted sets on the floor with a simple car mechanism hauling you above them. That is correct. It is also besides the point. For this is magic.

1-5. Matterhorn Bobsleds. My first proper roller coaster, staring a life-long love affair. Impossible to ride without thinking of my father, who created enough reassurance for me to ride the first time. A true original - the first tubular steel track, the first block-dispatch system, the first anywhere near this elaborately themed - and still not duplicated anywhere. And THE beacon/icon when approaching DL. Just seeing a picture of it makes me happy.

1-5. Sailing Ship Columbia. I prefer it to the Mark Twain due to the below decks exhibit. Gives you a real sense of how people used to live on a ship such as this. The ship simultaneously seems grand and large (on the small ROA) and impossibly tiny (when you imagine it in the middle of the Pacific). And you DO imagine such a thing, because this is an old-school "fill in the blanks with your OWN imagination" DL-style ride. On the quiet back side of the ROA, this is as close to taking you back in time as DL gets these days.

    And there you have it.

It is hard for me to pick just five and nearly impossible to rank them, but I will take a shot at it. There are plenty of rides that are more thrilling than the ones on my list, but here are five rides that I NEVER skip: line or no line, kids or no kids, rain or no rain, etc. These rides are irreplaceable. For me, a trip to Disneyland just is not the same without them.

    1. Jungle Cruise

Probably the best all-around ride. This Walt Disney original remains untouched by re-theming. It is a perfect mix of beautiful scenery, animatronics and live-action. The skippers add a human element that makes the ride different each time. It is also a different ride at night or in the rain. It is entertaining and relaxing. It is not too long or too short. Anyone can ride it...even my son's service dog! There is nothing else like it (outside of Disney parks).

    2. Pirates of the Caribbean

What is a trip to Disneyland without riding Pirates of the Caribbean? Even with Captain Jack Sparrow, the essence of the ride remains the same. I love the various "layers" of the ride: the bayou, the caverns, the treasure, the attack/cannons, the village, the fire, etc. It was a fun ride when I was three years old and I still enjoy it at...my current age. Storytelling perfection. 100% Disney magic.

    3. Matterhorn

    "Build this!" -WD

It is almost as fun to observe up close as it is to actually ride it. The Matterhorn is a perfect representation of what it tries to emulate: a bobsled ride down a mountain. There is just one short ascent to the top (in the dark, as the anticipation builds) and it is literally all downhill after that: in and out of the mountain, a couple of quick views of the abominable snowman and a plunge into the water to slow the bobsled down. Then the line everyone knows: "Remain seated please; permanecer sentados, por favor."

    4. Peter Pan

Best dark ride ever. I could say so many good things about Peter Pan. Disney simply got everything right on this one. You really do feel like you are in a living storybook, flying from page to page as you move from scene to scene. The flight over London never gets old. People wait 45-60 minutes to ride this 55 year-old attraction. Enough said.

    5. Disneyland Railroad

Yes, the Disneyland Railroad! Think about it. It is the first thing you see when you enter the park. A switch inside me clicks when I hear the whistle of the steam engine and (like magic) I am in another world. You wave to complete strangers when it passes by (or when you are on it). Everyone enjoys a ride on a train. It is timeless. There are four entrances throughout the park. It is the one ride that you could literally stay on all day (not that I would do that). I do not use it to get around the park. I ride it just to ride it.

I guess that is technically 9 attractions because the experience is different day and night. I also have to ride Mr. Toads Adventure!

I had a hard time just listing Disneyland rides, and if I was including other parks, it'd probably change my list... It's just more interesting if we're comparing lists of the same criteria. Not that there's a law or anything. No offense or picking-on intended. =)
