I get an ill-feeling .. Disney would not go the extra mile to give the surrounding area .. as much rich detail .. as they attempted in those two other examples.

That a PM is futuristic doesn't mean it's a good idea. While they have their uses (airports), I doubt they will ever be a common mode of urban transportation. It's like how Segways were touted to be the urban transportation device of the future. They found a niche, but to think they would ever be ubiquitous was unrealistic.

It's still nice to look Forward though.

Better than thinking the automobile is going to solve all our future transportation needs!

That's only if you think inside the box. Automobiles don't have to be internal combustion machines subject to gridlock. Why couldn't some form of PM technology be applied to cars? What if you had a electric/hydrogen/hybrid whatever car that communicated with a network and took over the driving once you got "online?" Out on the open road the car would work the "old-fashioned" manual way, but once you got to the city, you'd input where you wanted to go, and the computer would take over. Farfetched? Probably not much more than envisioning PM network.

Somehow .. I don't think my smart, fuel cell vehicle is going to get me to Anaheim from LA down the current I-5 freeway any faster. ;)

But I decided to pull it.

Here .. we are both taking jabs at each other. ;) LOL

But anyway ... just jabbing at you for the fun here ....

You do call yourself TREKkeruss right? As in Star TREK? Where's your 23rd-24th Century way of thinking? :p

I just get this feeling .. we are all so stuck in thinking in 20th Century terms.

I think the world can only take the automobile so far .. and that's it.

I don't know if we'll ever get to a "Star Trek" world ... we're we are teleported around the world in just a few seconds. But what's going to help our cities that were built around the automobile .. are overhead systems ... connecting building to building.

We can come up with one excuse after another .. after another why WE THINK it's impractical .. but sooner or later ... as us "20th Century" thinking relics will pass on .. and it's up to the new generations to get something done .. instead of coming up with more excuses, and ultimately not get anything done.

Why does it have to be overhead? NYC, Tokyo, Paris, London, etc. all have fantastic subway systems. Is walking a block or a few really that bad? Aren't we Americans too lazy as it is?

Anyway .. I think a combination of both Subway and Overhead would be nice.

In movies ... overhead systems add to the overall aesthetic of city. Given it a new appearance - instead of just the same old - 20th Century type layout.

(Now who's thinking within the box? Just kidding trek ;P )

I have loved how visionaries and futurists have drawn up new looking cities that transform the static stand-alone buildings ... and breath a type of LIFE that look like "blood arteries" to a living, breathing society.

The 1967 Peoplemover exuded that ... with giving the surrounding buildings more "purpose" and made it all feel like one living component .. than just a bunch of static stationary buildings.

We're just so used to boring static buildings that stand alone .. it's as if we can't think of anything else that transform us away from this old city format.

Hence .. my "thinking in 20th Century terms" line.

Anyway .. not trying to get under your skin .. or anyone elses.

    I'm still that "futurist" :)

    (A cynical non believer .. I'm not.)

Which is one of the reasons I hold on to the Disneyland experience to this day in my life .. because the park is more than just simply a place to "amuse" me - hence Amusement Park. (It's so much more than that. And in some cases, use to be)

Walt's original EPCOT design .. was really interesting .. because the Monorail took you from good distances .. to a "hub" in the city outskirts .. then a Peoplemover would take us the general city section we need to get to. With a walk that could be 1 to a few blocks.

Walking a few city blocks isn't bad at all. It's when a transporation system gets you no closer than 10-15 blocks of where you need to go. Are you going to walk 15 city blocks?

That's where Walt's peoplemover comes in.

I'm sure many tourist who went to the Olympics jumped on this system .. and got them with 1-5 city blocks within all the major "points" of the city.

The reason why this is important is because the uniqueness of these things isn't what it was back in the early '70's. For someone like me who rides BART everyday, I find the Monorail to be a rather ho-hum how experience. Add the wait in line and I'd rather skip it. Similarly, how would bringing back the Peoplemover add value to the entertainment experience in Tomorrowland?

Actually, what a great idea. Call it Speed Cycles by day, then change the name at night to LightCycles.

For you, but I'm wondering about the majority of people visiting the place though. I'm not saying that it doesn't have appeal, but there has to be something that is more compelling both in terms of technology and fun-ness.
