My Mother-in-Law smoked and my husband hated it. My Dad smoked and I didn't like it either. So who knows why I even thought about ?!?

On the 10th of this month (hey thats tomorrow) it will be 4 months without a smoke Why did you stop? Several reasons, but upon doctors reccomendations and Jayna nagging me. My smoking started in the 6th grade when I took a pack of my grandma's Virginia Slim 120s. Than I stole a carton of Camel non filters from the dairy by my house (yes I got caught and had to work them off). From there, I smoke about a pack a day in Jr High, but 9th grade I was smoking 2 to 3 packs a day among other things. I got up to about 5 packs a day when I was strung out about my junior year (9 years clean now...woohoo!!!!!!) Backed down to about 3 packs a day and it remained that way until 4 months ago. I think I am just about out of the habit, but its been tough. As others have stated, they are social smokers and I have had to remove myself from those enviroments until the cravings go away. So no bars that allow smoking (yes there are still plently in CA tha allow you to smoke), no parties, no poker nights and n o breaks with smokers at work.

It's complex & many things all happened (for a reason) in a one week time span. I realized cigarettes were controling my life. Example, I had $4 in my wallet, only 4 cigarettes left & I owed a co-worker $3. I actually was trying to figure out how I could get out of oweing them this money. ugh. Then, I realized whenever I took a deep breath, my lungs had that feeling, like when you were a kid & you swallowed too much water. It was painful to breathe deep. My s-i-l was in the hospital with pneumonia & asthma. They gave her this device to blow into. When it reached (300 I believe) she could go home. I tried it when I visited her. She could go blow the little ball higher than I could & I wasn't sick. Yeah, time to quit. So I did it for myself & did it cold turkey. I had a terrible time with the DT's (I smoked over 3 packs a day) & would never recomend going cold turkey. See a doctor first. Best thing I have ever done for myself. 11 years Wednesday & I've never gone back, not even for the so common "just one won't hurt." I'd be hooked again in a second.

YOu will make little side trips just to go get smokes (unless you got cartons at a time and freeze them as I did).

At about the same time, his only brother was also diagnosed with cancer of the mouth and throat. He lived in another town, and each year as we went up and visited, more of his face was gone. He went from a gregarous vibrant man to a virtual recluse. I was NEVER tempted to try it.

Several reasons -- DD was the most important one, but I also always felt bad when I smoked and it was expensive and horrible. My late husband was very, very instrumental in helping me quit -- and I was a nasty witch during the quiting process - but now I can't believe I ever smoked.
