I was hoping for something like a modern fantasyland type ride with full 3 dimensional props and sets and audio animtronics (or at least simple moving figures) and practicle special effects.

Or do you mean the more elaborate D Ticket dark rides that have a gimmick or more novel execution on a bigger scale, like Roger Rabbitt and Monsters Inc.? Either way, a dark ride is a dark ride. It's either a cheap plywood thing from Walt Disney's era, or a more elaborate plywood thing from the Eisner/Iger era. I can only imagine the howls of horror and disgust from Internet message boards if a cornball plywood paradise like Alice In Wonderland opened in 2007. How dare Iger and Lasseter cheapen Disneyland with some cheap plywood menace like Alice! ;-)

" I wouldn't call either of those rides elaborate. I would more along the lines of Sindbad's Storybook Voyages. That would be an elaborate darkride that this could be based on (in terms of props and style of animatronics).

And the only reason they came up with it was because of the virtual ride that was included in the Little Mermaid DVD. Apparently everything that they have been pitching has just been rehashed (and cheaper budget) concepts from the past few years, left over from WDI’s old political management. Just hope that WDI’s new management and DCA’s new creative director will change the direction in favor of some real creativity instead of just stuffing the park with cartoons.

I've seen many ideas from all sorts of people who have presented ideas online that sounded like they'd be great. I can't imagine it'd be that hard to come up with something good.

There ARE far too many cartoon-related attractions being forced into ALL the Disney parks, inappropriately. I can't fathom the rationale to put a Little Mermaid attraction into a San Francisco-themed region. It really makes you want to cry. With all that money, you know they're going to design and build a lovely infrastructure... but suddenly you've got this very RANDOM concept stuck into it... just because it's - what? Water? Ocean? Ick. Ariel's Restaurant is one thing. Heck, the proposed (and never built) Ursula spinner in the middle of SCREAMIN' would have been fine - it was a spinner that would have at least added some colorful kinetics in that little spot. But an expensive, fully-fleshed out attraction in the wrong place, is like bringing a wedding cake to a birthday party. You can eat it, enjoy it, but it's the wrong choice, and people (rightly) think you've lost your sense of taste, if not your mind.

What about an "Ocean" attraction - along the lines of the old IF YOU HAD WINGS attraction at WDW years and years ago? It wouldn't have to be terribly elaborate, but breezy and imaginative. Start out by surfing a wave, then roll into tidal pools, maneuver into reefs, come up above the waves in Catalina, then rock on a sailboat up the coast... Sort of the inverse-version of SOARIN' - but you could do it in an Omnimover, with clever sets that combine filmed elements with physical sets. I guess that would go better in the Wharf section, but I hold out hope for an attraction over there that focuses on Marine Mammals - whales, seals, walruses, etc. A little edutainment, a little charm. Monterey, after all...

"They already tried a park full of non-cartoon based rides (DCA when it opened). Nobody liked it." Yes, and the Pooh ride is so popular because it is a cartoon? No. It's not that. You can have a ride that is popular or unpopular regardless of whether it is based on a cartoon. "On this we're completely agreed." It's interesting that some people who agree on almost NOTHING seem to agree on this. This is either a sign of the coming apocolypse, or it is something Disney might want to take notice of. If people from all over the map on opinions otherwise start saying similar things, it might actually project into the general public in terms of perception and opinion.
