He used the example of, "what if you could get out of the boat and GO INTO the pirate village!"

Unfortunately, with today's ADD, Playstation Generation, they would be bored before the boat left the embarkation station!

I think Westcot's idea and philosophy was basically done even before the first troublemaker put their hand up to oppose it in an Anaheim town council meeting.

Mind you I am not saying *I* think it was bad, quite the opposite, in fact. I mean, for the basic churro munching, soda slurping family from Podunk North Hackensack, Westcot was TOO classy. It would have been lost on them.

I mean, look at what has happened to Epcot. The Living Seas has become cartoon Nemo land, Horizons is a gussied up gravitron and WoM has become the "thrilling"(rolls eyes)Test Track. The less said about SE the better(It pains me to think that when I return, that BEAUTIFUL and SUBLIME backwards descent with that incredible music will not be there!!! : ( )

No - had Westcot been built, by now they would be tearing down its pagodas, palaces and spheres to make way for flumes, coasters and maybe even a parachute drop ride.

Long-lasting, immersive experiences are what me wants!

Don't get me started on how Epcot has been raped. It used to rival Disneyland in my attentions. Now, not as compelling.

But I think your view of coasters and parachute drops going into So Cal is off the mark, 6 Flags and the raped Knott's Berry Farm cover that angle. Disney is all about the toons now, remember?

But it certainly is the case in Paris where they love to mix the toons and thrills (TSPL and Crush Coaster) as the case in point. To quote Gantuu in Lilo and Stitch, I think it's an "abomination".

I think there's more to it than that. To some degree the sheer amount of things to do at DLR can be overwhelming when you have limited vacation time. I'd probably think twice before committing two hours to one attraction at DL when my time is limited.

That is one complaint of yours that I can't relate to. Mainly because the theme of DCA shouldn't have been applied to a Disney park (at least a first-class one) in the first place. The embarrassing nature of the park upon its premiere in 2001 and the fact that both California and Los Angeles over the past decade have seen their smallest growth in population since the late 1800s seem to be an appropriate symbol for one another. (I'll sidestep the current statistics of California having the second highest unemployment rate in the US.)

I've yet to see LM, but I can sort of understand your criticism of the overly plastic-y or polychromed look of the attraction's figures. I guess the Imagineers figured that since they were recreating scenes from an animated feature, there was no need to make things look even somewhat realistic or natural.

Beyond that, you ultimately have to judge Little Mermaid in the context of this comment -- in the context of the pockmarked history of the park -- which I wholeheartedly agree with...

    >> It replaced Golden Dreams, one of the most boring, cheap and borderline depressing movie attractions ever to scar a Disney theme park. <<

In other words, thank God for small favors.

I think you're being a bit too rough on DCA, Mr. X. The park definitely is better today than it was in 2001. Back then, as it still is today, yes, DCA was a patchwork-quilt. But most of that "quilt" in the beginning was painfully full of holes and overtly tacky "fabric." Enough repair has been done to the park since then to make it somewhat passable.

It's still a far cry from DisneySea, but I'd say it is the only Disney park outside of that second one in Tokyo that I'd want to visit.

Also, some of what has made DCA so fascinating since its premiere is scrutinizing all the blunders, miscues and budget issues connected to it, and figuring out what (or who) was responsible for them. So the park has been quite a learning experience, if only in the varying, odd or unpredictable nature of people's perceptions and tastes---evident in the various clashes of opinion throughout this thread.

I thought he said he was just no longer posting? Didn't know he was actually banned. It doesn't matter anyway - he's been banned at least once before and somehow wiggled his way back into the admin's good graces. He'll be back.
