I still remember my kids' preschool graduation ceremonies. Little mortar boards made out of construction paper, "diplomas" rolled and tied with a ribbon.

I wish I'd videotaped it, damn it.

Certainly, as an avowed Atheist (I've since given it up, and consider myself an agnostic nowadays), I'd have struggled with the question of whether to attend the ceremony.

BTW, do they still do invocations at high school graduations? Way back in 1978, when I graduated (from a public high school in California), they had a Christian minister of some sort give a speech. It wasn't exactly a prayer, which I guess got them around the rules against prayer in school, but it was close enough to make me feel awful and left out.

They did when I graduated in '95. Of course, I live in the middle of the Bible belt, so no surprise there. It was pretty much a prayer, and as an agnostic at the time, I definitely felt uncomfortable & left out.

I think that those people who would be offended by the site would rather have had the cross and/or statues covered.
