And fourth - People right next to me enthusiastically said a few nice words like - That was absolutely terrific!! As they got up from their seats. Where I live, people are generally conservative. So, I don't know what's going on, back at my former home - the U.S. for people to be so overly critically on the Lone Ranger. If people don't see it, it's going to be because they listened to movie critics. That's their first mistake! The second mistake is to think - Oh, it's just a kid's Western. (Thinking of the 'squeaky clean' 50s TV version of it). People here at LP know me to be a huge critic! Do I need to cite examples? ;-) I panned "Oz" ... I had more than a few choice words about the new Superman movie. This one - I can see the producers, and everyone else involved really worked hard to create what I thought to be one of the most enjoyable movie experiences I've seen in a while. And I prefer it over the PotC films. I'm not into westerns. I can vaguely think of a 1997 Best Picture film that I passed on. (To this day) But as a built-in Disney films person ... I knew I was going to see this - No matter what the previews, commercials, critics had to say. This isn't one of those - "Well, I'm not into westerns, so I'll pass" type of films - When it's really, just an overall enjoyable action film (yes, some violence - Not for kids). I can recall some other "western/sh" films of late, that were kind-of .. or .. a lot cheesy (The one with Daniel Craig and the aliens from outerspace - Wild, Wild West with Will Smith) .... Instead, I found Lone Ranger to be "cheeky" in a good way! Just enough comedy in places. Overall, I was surprised at how well it was made. Very impressed. A future Bluray in my collection!

And I remember "Let the River Run" did tick me off because it beat out the exquisitely evocative "Calling You."

Working Girl deserved so much more Oscar success in '88. It is a near flawless movie IMHO. Melanie Griffiths just came up against Jodie Foster and the Best Picture went to Rain Man.

Although Daft Punk's recent success might price them out of the movie business. I managed to pick up the 2-disc special edition of the soundtrack and it really is exceptional stuff.

The music fits perfectly to the visuals.

True, YLUML hasn't aged well, but at the time, it really wasn't much of a contest.

Originally Posted By leemac <<As for Candle in the Water well I just that Pete's Dragon is not my favorite Disney film>> I can get that. I do have a fondness for it. Ultimately Ron Miller should never have been a producer - he just didn't know how to construct a movie. Pete's Dragon has a wonderful cast that does well with a script that is pretty clunky. The director was a Type-A TV director and it felt like it. However the weakest link was Miller. So many promising movies like Tron, Pete's Dragon and Escape to Witch Mountain suffered with him as producer before he even became Prez in '80. Personally I'd prefer a Bedknobs and Broomsticks remake to Pete's Dragon. I loved Mary Norton's books as a kid. The movie is a guilty pleasure even though Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi couldn't quite work out how dark to take the film.
