Now it's time to cross the finish line with Doug Hoffman so that he can get to work for District 23 and the rest of America.*** Later, Republican Dede Scozzafava replied by endorsing the Democrat. http://www.politico.com/blogs/...ens.html ***“In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be an independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York. Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first,” Scozzafava said in a statement. “Please join me in voting for Bill Owens on Tuesday..."*** Bwahahahahahaha.

I mean, it would be amusing to see another Michelle Bachman in Congress...but if we can at all avoid it....

I expect that regardless of whether or not the Republican candidate has dropped out of the race, people will still vote for the Republican candidate on the ballot. I don't think that Republicans automatically vote for the Hoffman in this case. Also, if the option to vote a "straight" ticket is offered, the 3rd party candidate has to be voted for specifically in order to override the straight ticket. People that us this mechanism for voting will be voting for a candidate that has dropped out of the race.

But for Republicans to lose a seat that was held since the 19th century? That's big news. And it's even more important given how it happened - the crazies of the party intervened and lost. Maybe there's hope after all....

I am glad that even if the RNC can't seem to find a rational voice, Republican voters seem to be much more reasonable. Losing a seat after 150 years -- wow.

I predict (gulp...check this thread a year from today if you wanna say "haha X was wrong!", or not) that in the mid-term elections this will come to a head. Palin and the nuts aren't going to slink away just because of a minor bloody nose in New York, no no, they'll try it in spades next year and if the results are even close to the same, the Republican party will finally reject the nuts and get back down to the business of governing and speaking sensibly to voters...in the meantime from 2010-2012ish, the Democrats will have huge majorities in Congress but still get nothing done. Thus spake X.

Ironically, Gingrich was probably right all along - the GOP candidate with the high voter recognition and proven track record in the region might have won it, had she been given the chance. If republicans continue take their cues from people like Palin and Beck, they'll continue to alienate everyone but the foamers. And neither Palin nor Beck is an actual elected official, so they can shoot their mouths off all they want with total impunity. If they're wrong, so what? They've got nothing to lose.

These individuals are making HUGE boatloads of cash spewing this conservative crap over the airways or through books or speaking engagements. That's the real reason they're forcing themselves into the driver's seat on the GOP bus. Identify the prejudices, push the crazy base fear buttons, get everyone riled up with doom and gloom, then sell their words-o-wisdom to anyone foolish enough to buy it. If Palin/Rush/Beck/Hannity/O'Reilly/Coulter/Malkin couldn't sell their books or get multi-million dollar broadcasting contracts or be paid hundreds of thousands to speak at moron gatherings, we'd never hear from them. They do it for the money. It's about the money, it's always been about the money. Ideology be hanged. They're just siding with the group who's dumb enough to pay them the big bucks after their base emotions have been jolted.
