Even if they have the best training programs and could hire only the creme of the crop, it is safe to say a certain percentage aren't going to work out...regardless of the training. So, let's assume 5% are bad seeds. That is 2500 bad employees. A big number and you are certain to run into some of them.

Irvine paddlewheeler from crashing into each other. As I was paused there, waiting for my turn to continue, a huge gust of wind hit my boat and caused us to turn 180 degrees. I was now facing the opposite direction with a boat load of passengers wondering what the heck I was going to do. Never learned about 'what to do if your boat is blown by wind' in any SOP manual. I don't recall discussing it any training session with my Mike Fink Keelboat Trainer. It took me some wrangling, sweating, a relatively cool head, and about 7-8 minutes later, with what seemed like everyone in the Rivers of America watching me [including a now stopped Richard F. Irvine], I got the keelboat righted and on its way. If this had happened today, in this age of internet gossip, one wonders who should be blamed. My Trainer? My Supervisor? Bill Sullivan? Bob Matheison? Dick Nunus? The Wind? Walt?

Originally Posted By Jim in Merced CA <That must have been very scary as far as the Keel boat.> It was very scary and nerve-racking. The 7-8 minutes seemed like hours. I got a round of applause from my 'crew' of passengers one we got righted. And lots of 'good jobs' from other cast members around the river. But nothing like that is in a training manual -- and stuff happens.

Oh, and I don't salivate over much other than food as my good pal Jon will tell you. <<The thrill is gained in stirring up the hyperbole over anything that can possibly be seen to forward a negative agenda.>> I must ask you Goofball in all seriousness, what negative agenda do you believe I have? I have been upfront and honest from the start regarding my 'agenda' and my love for WDW. So, please, do tell ... bobbelee's going to get as fat as me from all that popcorn if you don't just come out with it.

I actually have a life and was out for four hours, but then it started to get really windy (near the beach) and the temp dropped to 70 and I decided it was time to head back. Since it's not even supposed to reach 60 here tomorrow, and I don't have to work, I may have plenty of time to entertain you. I'll do my best! (Doobie really should send me that check for all the posts I generate on the LP ... or at least buy me some LE pins!)

I'm disappointed that Disney did away with the dock workers a number of years ago for the boats between the resorts. It seems much safer to have someone waiting AND someone driving. Not just one doing both jobs. I used to think that transportation CM's made a lot more money than others too. That isn't the case. Survey CM's and Photopass make nearly $10.00 an hour. Transportation gets an extra .50 or so per hour more than standard to start with, unless that has changed recently.

But if you happen to run into a truly bad one or an ugly (poetntially dangerous) situation, like my friend experienced, that won't matter one bit. Look at it this way. If there's a 30 car pile up and only one person dies, most folks will be very happy. But to that person's family ... it will be one of the worst days of their lives.
