I further confess that my neck is getting me down, the shoulder injury I thought I had is apparently an inflammed disc (I went to the doctors) she's given me some much stronger antiinflammatories (sp) and yesterday it felt a bit better, so I ran some chores and did things around the house... Today I'm in lots of pain again :(

(Actually, it would be a lovely gesture to invite all of us along on your honeymoon, but I guess we'll settle for a wedding report and/or pictures if we must).

And I further confess I have an evil and wicked friend who found a way to make me waste four hours today (not in a row). Not that I'm telling, but she has two different numbers in her name.

    Hey Jeff,

I want to thank you for keeping this morning’s event on everyone’s front lobe. I have never done anything like it. I found that quiet reverence that I have only known in two other places: The Crypt of John Paul Jones and Memorial Hall at the Naval Academy. Memorial Hall has a ceiling about 30 feet tall with heavy stone walls. There is a marble case that contains all the names of Navy Academy graduates that have died in the line of duty. Above the case is the “Don’t Give Up The Ship†flag flown during the Battle of Lake Erie. It is a very special place for me. I keep a photograph of Memorial Hall over my desk with two of my favorite quotes. The first is the rest of Captain James Lawrence’s battle cry

“Tell the men to fire faster, fight ‘til she sinks boys, don’t give up the ship.†The second is from John Paul Jones “I wish no connection with any ship that does not sail fast for I intend to go in harm’s wayâ€

I was writing my Pop to tell him about this morning. I will share it with you too.

I wanted to share with you the very special morning that Jack, Ava and I shared today.

Jack is a Cub Scout. Each Memorial Day the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts in our council place flags in the National Cemetery near San Francisco. When we arrived there were people everywhere – Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts – very busy and hard at work. A working party to ensure that row after row of graves were adored with an American flag.

We reached our section and set to work. Ava held the flags, I punched the hole (this cool little pick that has a spacer you rest against the headstone – I always wondered how they got 1,000s of flags in a straight row) and Jack would put the flag in the hole. We just fell into a rhythm. At each head stone while I spaced off the pick and made the hole for the flag I would say, for example,

“Jack and Ava this is Private First Class Anderson. Private Anderson was from Kentucky and was in the Navy. He served in World War One.†Then Jack would place the flag in the hole and we would say “Thank you Private Anderson.†Then we would go on to the next gravesite. Sometimes we would discuss the job that the person did in the military – I did have a bias towards discussing those that served in the Navy – whether a boatswain’s mate or a Sea Bee or Machinist Mate. We were in no hurry and tried to pause a bit at each one.

It was overwhelming to think of all those who have gone before us. That thought in full view of such a small fraction of them was almost too much to bear. There were a large number of Spanish American War vets as well. They have a specially decorated headstone so that they really stand out. We paused at one person who served as a veterinarian in the Army. It took a minute to realize that in the 1890’s veterinarians were probably one of the most important folks in a cavalry regiment.

By the time we stopped the place had nearly cleared out. We ended on a large hill on the west end near the main entrance. As we started back to the car Jack was the first to notice. The place was nearly empty. Quiet. Somber. Few cars. No bustle. Empty again except for hundreds and hundreds of flags, standing at attention one foot from the center of each head stone. Each flag moved in the steady morning breeze that carried fog over the nearby hills. The entire cemetery stretched out down the hill in front of us. Jack said, “Look at all the flags. It looks like the gravestones are sparkling.†Out of the mouths of babes indeed.

It seems the most important cheer I ever did at the Naval Academy was the last one.

“Three cheers for those who go before us†and “Three cheers for those we leave behindâ€

I spent my morning surrounded by those who went before us.

    Don’t ever forget.
