    Where are you from?

I assume you've been to Anaheim and Orlando? You were probably in a lot more danger in either of those places than in extremely safe, touristy Manhattan. ;)

(I understand your concern though, when I was a kid and visited NYC back in the 70's, it WAS a very, very scary place...but they have really turned it around)

Shhh!!! Now my cover is blown! :p

NYC is actually the safest big city in America.

    Thanks to me.

(D'oh! Shhhhh!! I hate when I do that to myself.)

One suggestion I'd have if you're at all concerned about NYC but would like to visit and see some shows is to stay at a hotel near Times Square. You'll be right at the heart of the action, and you'll have all of the theaters within 2-3 blocks of your hotel. You could take a shuttle or taxi from the airport directly to your hotel, and then treat Times Square / Broadway as your "bubble" for the vacation. You'd be able to see all the shows you want, and I think you'd get the idea that NYC isn't an inherently dangerous place.

That sounds like it would deplete my bank account even with using TKTS. For some bizarre reason, I have no desire to visit NYC but have been told how outrageously expensive it is. Not only the theatre and hotel, but the food prices seem really over the top and I can't do fast food every day.

(Looking forward to Mary Poppins opening here at the end of the year!!!!!)

Not only that, it's probably has the biggest variety of restaurants per square block of any city in the world - certainly better options than LA or most other major American cities. Also, the subway is easy to navigate and inexpensive making transportation cheap as well.

I just got back from Hawaii, third time in a year, all different Islands, and I'm already looking for travel deals back and further south for my Oct vacation. Bora Bora looks amazing. :)

I grew up in San Antonio, Texas in the 70s and 80s, so when you visited is the same era when my opinions of NYC were formed.

I will admit, though, that being a "theatre person" and fan of Project Runway, my fear has lessened over the last few years. You just gotta give me time. :)

This has been nagging at me ever since I read it soon after he first posted it. Not because utahjosh uses scripture for reference in cases like this, and not because he quotes it to us. Rather, I can't figure out how it's relevant to what we're talking about.

I read it carefully, expecting to find Biblical support for opposition to gay marriage, but I found none. But for what reason other than that would utahjosh quote it to us? I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he intended it to be part of the conversation and didn't just pick post 18 in this thread to insert some randomly-selected verse.

So I read it again more carefully, thinking it just must be in there somewhere. My best guess is that it's the first phrase: "For men shall be lovers of their own selves." When I first read it, I had taken it to mean either individually, or all of man collectively, and not some reference to two men loving each other. The rest of the verse certainly seems to refer to men either individually or as a collective of the whole, and not to anything relating to homosexuality.

So, why is utahjosh quoting it to us? It would not surprise me if someone that was against gay marriage would quote this as Biblical support for their point of view, as this stretching, twisting, and taking out of context is used all the time when interpreting the Bible. There may very well be a prohibition in the Bible against gay marriage, but this certainly isn't it.

Does anyone have an idea as to what utahjosh was getting at? Of course, ideally, utahjosh will chime in himself and enlighten us.

They see society "forcing" it on them and their power to stop it slipping away.

It's actually a fairly common scripture to quote when one's back is against the wall because logic, reason, and right isn't on one's side. Just about all the arguments against gay marriage have fallen apart, so all that's left is "God said so." This scripture is just a way for people like Josh to reassure themselves that they're right, they know what it's all about because their scriptures tell them, and they will come out on top.

The Mormon garment has a mark above the right knee that symbolizes that "Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is the Christ." Mormons quite literally wear the knowledge that someday everyone will know that they're right and will be forced to acknowledge it. Mind, in fairness, I don't think that's a common thought. But when frustrated, as I think UtahJosh was, I think it's easy to fall back on that "Someday these sinners will find out just how wrong they were" attitude. I heard a lot of that around here after Big Love showed portions of the Mormon temple ceremony. There was nothing anybody could do, so they reassured themselves that those responsible would be punished in the afterlife. My guess is this is a common theme across Christendom.
