Yup. Remember that time Josh posted how much he wished Jesus would return right then to show us how wrong we all were? It would have been funny if it hadn't been so twisted.

While I think Josh is a zealous, but harmless person, I do generally think these kinds of sentiments are dangerous.

In the history of American religion and politics, you always had religious zealots. But they kept well out of politics because they believed it would taint their organizations and their beliefs. They simply saw it as their job to be good examples and to preach the word and hope people would follow them. There were minor exceptions, sure, but by and large, that was the attitude of the religious in America.

All that changed with the rise of Billy Graham and then excelerated with the rise of Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and the Moral Majority. Now we have people who have hopelessly intertwined their political and their religious beliefs. So now we have an environment where someone can see a political decision or a vote as being an affront to God. It's now about good and evil instead of just political opinion.

And as a result, we're reaping the consequences. A man walks into a Unitarian church and shoots the place up and says he just wanted to kill as many Democrats as he could. People like Eric Rudolph bomb abortion clinics. All the while, people like Glen Beck add fuel to the fire in all their faux outrage in the name of making a buck. But thanks to people like Beck and Hannity, unstable, uneducated people think their President is a Muslim terrorist. It really is a dangerous environment the right-wing has created.

Meanwhile, 14 Congressional Republicans have introduced a resolution encouraging the President to designate 2010 as "The National Year of the Bible".

I'm all for it, personally. Just so long as the following 5 years consist of other, similarly grandiose year long proclamations in favor of; The Tao-te-ching, The Bhagava Gita, The Book of Mormon, the Tipitaka, and of COURSE (2011 for sure!) the most blessed al-Qur'an.

After all, we have Separation of Church and State, NOT Separation of Church and GOD (that's what the Senate said when they decided to start a prayin before every session), so this is the ONLY equitable solution.

    Isn't it?

    If not, why not?

I'd love to watch C-Span when THOSE debates take to the floor! :p
