Seems like holding the bible to such esteem kinda goes against "4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth."

Originally Posted By ecdc >>I've asked the question in post 23 many times and never gotten an answer.<< Here's your answer: They don't see it that way. There's two insidious pieces of "logic" at work here. First, is that Mormons (and in fairness, any religious supporters of prop 8) see themselves as the victims. It's always the case historically that the oppressors see themselves as the oppressed. The logic went that white southerners' rights were being infringed upon because they were being forced to send their children to school with black children. Furthermore, I frequently see on some acquaintances' Facebook pages, posts lamenting how "good has become evil" and how those who are just doing what is right are being persecuted - a sure sign of the last days. So the golden rule is trumped by much bigger doctrines and self-fulfilling prophecies. Second, the "logic" also goes that saying gay marriage is a golden rule issue is like saying murder or pedophilia is a golden rule issue. If someone wanted to kill another person, I'd never let them under the golden rule, so why would I let them do this sin? Yes, I know how backwards that thinking is, but that's how people see it.

How does it affect the institution of marriage? Marriage to me is a very personal thing between two people. It's not something to be flaunted around like some kind of status symbol. What happens in one marriage doesn't affect what happens in your marriage. If half of all people get divorced, it doesn't make my marriage any less of whatever it is, for better or for worse. I just don't get it. Someone else getting married, whether they are gay or straight, doesn't affect you or me.

Well, you could have gotten the wedding planner I wanted, and ergo I got stuck with a second-rate wedding planner, my day wasn't as wonderful as yours, and that planted a seed of discontent that later blossomed into me getting a divorce all becuase you decided to get married! And, just in case ANYONE is taking this seriously, I AM JOKING! This is my way of saying that another couple getting married doens't affect me at all.

What cheers me is the matter-of-fact way the Associated Press uses the words "wife" and "married," as simple facts with no value judgments or complicated explanations. The times, they are a-changin'...
