I do think that it hurts that this era doesn't have a Sherman Brothers or a X that is just good at writing park music.

Yes, it would still be good, but the music helps set the mood. And "Grim Grinning Ghosts" is an exceptional song!

    Thanks, X.

I actually do them for no one but myself (usually). If someone else enjoys them, that's icing on the cake.

And sadly, you're right. That one was very appropriate.

Usually a good time to not.

<<As long as the ride is good, I could care less about the song. People don't go for the song, they go for the ride.>>

I could write a song about the above, but it would likely sound like gangsta rap with all the f bombs tossed in.

Suffice to say, your point is totally 100% correct while at the same time being totally 100% incorrect when it comes to Disney attractions.

They have (until the WalMart Era took hold) been viewed as stories. And much like any good film, you have music to help set the tone and tell the tale.

Listen to the Land did that. Grim Grinning Ghosts still does.

But when you put crap into parks such as Primeval Whirl or Stitch's Great Belchoff or Test Track (yeah, had to toss that in whether people love it or not), there's not much that would make you hear music, let alone inspire a song.

And let's face it, if your attraction has no memorable sound then Disney doesn't have to pay anyone to write and record it.

<<The lack of songs has been a sign of the times. For two reasons:

    1. The extreme lack of amazing songwriters outside of Alan Menken, who is only now getting back to Disney to work on Rapunzel.>>

Sorry. You lose. Menken may be a great musical talent, but saying there aren't any other would be akin to saying Disney needs execs like Phil Holmes because there's no one else out there.

<<2. The change to thrill rides, which is not an entirely a bad thing.>>

When they are mindless 2-3 minutes in awarehouse/sounstage type building, it is.

And you can have a thrill ride with music. Hell, Disney pioneered that with things like Mansion, Splash Mountain, Indy, not to mention new versions of Space Mountain and RnRC.

<<And its not like I hate Disney Music. I've got over 250 Disney related songs on my iPod. I'm just saying that the lack of songs is not the end of the world.>>

Continually lowering quality in every aspect of their business isn't the end of the world, but is simply a microcosm of a world that is a much dumber, uglier and simple place.

I love music. All kinds. And at Disney, music is requisite.

If you don't think so go see Wishes or Reflections of Earth or Fantasmic with no music. Or take a ride on PoC or SW with none.

We haven't lost sight ... or sound of what the overall experience at Disney should be.

What everyone is remembering is the old stuff from the now missing dark rides where you had the time to hear it. There really is no sense in spending thousands on a sound track that no one hears. The rides that still can use music as a defining part of the show, still do. Even the newest version of Imagination has music, Canada, USA, Norway, Mexico, Nemo, Soarin', Land and so on and that's just in Epcot. What about GMR, Mermaid, Star Tours, Muppets, Indiana Jones, ToT and RcRC in DHS. How about Pirates, Tiki Room, Splash Mtn., Country Bears, Big Thunder, Haunted Mansion, HoP, Buzz, CoP, Laugh Floor, Dumbo, the Carousel, Peter Pan, Pooh, Snow White, Philharmagic, Small World and even the Tea Cups in MK. I think there is way more music there than anyone is admitting too.

Test Track's queue is filled with a cacophony of shattering glass and crumpling metal. That junk doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as music in the World Showcase.

It's been way, way to long since they built rides like Journey into Imagination, Haunted Mansion, Horizons or Small World at WDW. Give us an actual ride-through animatronic, attraction - not a two minute thrill ride!!! (And give us a great new song too!)

The attraction that disproves your theory is DL's Space Mountain. That Dick Dale soundtrack was incredible! The new track is OK, but not really even in the same league as the DD track. And SM is a thrill ride, but it works great with the identifiable music track.

Even Test Track, although, high tech sounds, not really music, is identifiable with the attraction and unless or until Disney goes back to slow, dark rides the old "sing along" type stuff isn't really appropriate. The lack of pleasant music is really and offshoot of less pleasant attractions. Since no one, except we few, want them... they aren't needed and won't be coming soon. There's just no place to play them.

I'm not sure you can really know that it's just "we few" who want them. When's the last time that Disney really made a top-notch, slow-moving, ride-through attraction? It hasn't been done since the 80s really (in the US anyway), so it's hard to say how the public would react. It will be interesting to see how the general public reacts to the Little Mermaid ride at DCA in a few years.
