If that was your goal, then mission accomplished. But if there was any question on whether you could possibly have anything valid to contribute, then that has been officially laid to rest.

I'm going to explain this to you, so that - let's hope - you don't mindlessly repeat this trope ever again, to anyone. First of all, to try to equate that with Rubio flat-out lying was lame. As fkurucz said, "But there is a big difference between flubbing the number of states during a busy campaign stop after a long and exhausting day, and saying your family fled Castro when they didn't. The latter is a lie spoken to win sympathy." But here's the thing. Obama's "flub" wasn't even really a flub or an extremely minor one at most. Here's the context. Obama was reaching the end of a long and exhausting primary campaign against Hillary Clinton. He was talking about how long it was, and how (unlike many years, including this one) every contest counted because it was SO close between he and Clinton. Neither could take any contest for granted because delegates were so precious. They were fighting for every delegate, every primary. And there were - ta da! - 57 contests in the Democratic primaries that year. The 50 states plus DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, and the catch-all "Americans Living Abroad," if I remember correctly. Obama meant to say he had to compete in 57 contests or 57 primaries, but instead said "states." Whoop de freakin' do. And from THAT, Republicans repeat to each other ad naseum "Obama doesn't even know how many states there are!!!" And they really make themselves believe it, because they sort of need to believe it, I guess. And they assign it all sorts of importance. So, Donny... now that you know the story, can we count on you never to repeat this trope? Not only here, but within the echo chamber? And might we even count on you to correct your conservative friends when they bring it up? Hmmm?

That status added to his political rise, first in South Florida, where anti-Castro credentials are a must-have, and then statewide. Sen. Rubio says his parents 'were exiled from the home country they tried to return to because they did not want to live under communism. That is an undisputed fact.' Sen. Rubio has been prominently mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate to woo Hispanic voters. But the recently revealed chronology does not fully support Sen. Rubio’s claims. His parents arrived in America in 1956. Castro did not seize control of Cuba until 1959. Sen. Rubio’s parents actually came to the United States for economic rather than political reasons. Sen. Rubio was born in Miami in 1971. At that time, his parents had not yet sought American citizenship. Sen. Rubio calls allegations that he exaggerated his parents’ exile status “outrageous.” But he admits he was not fully aware of the chronology. “The dates I have given regarding my family’s history have always been based on my parents’ recollections of events that occurred over 55 years ago and which were relayed to me by them more than two decades after they happened.” He insists his parents were exiles because they intended to return to Cuba permanently – and his mother returned briefly in 1961 – but could not because of Castro. It seems clear to us that the story Sen. Rubio’s family members told among themselves was embellished. Such family myths glamorizing ancestors and their exploits are common. As noted, Sen. Rubio said he didn’t know all the details. What do you think? Did Marco Rubio lie about being the son of Cuban exiles? Now I can imagine my Dad has told me stuff he is off on as well
Originally Posted By Dabob2 <Did Marco Rubio lie about being the son of Cuban exiles? > Yes. You can't be exiled from Communist Cuba if you left willingly before it WAS Communist Cuba. And gimme a break on the "not fully aware of the chronology" stuff. Obviously Rubio's parents knew when they left, and they knew it was 3 years before Castro came to power. The only possible way he gets a pass is if his parents flat-out lied to HIM, and told him they came to the US after 1959. But that seems unlikely. Now, Donny - you didn't answer my question. Are you going to stop repeating the "Obama thinks there are 57 states" trope? Are you going to correct other conservatives who insist on repeating it?

Now I don't think he really thaught there are 57 states > Disconnect alert! How can it be a "solid mess up" if and not a simple slip of the tongue if he doesn't think there are 57 states? And you know full well that plenty of conservatives actually think he doesn't know this. (You yourself said earlier "how can he not know this?") so I'll ask again: will you have the guts to say to the next conservative who throws this out there "Actually I'm sure he knows that; he had a slip of the tongue?". <can you admit that Rubio could have possibly just never checked into what his parents told him as a child ?> I said earlier there's one way this isn't a lie by Rubio: if his parents lied to him. And he was so incurious about a central event in his parents' lives that he never looked into it. And they continued to lie to him about the year his entire life since every Cuban American knows the year Castro came to power. And his parents' extended families likewise lied about it. It could happen.

Here's what you really said: "Yeah kinda like remembering how many states there are, if you are from the United States you would never get that wrong." This implies that not only did he really not know - but that he's not "from the United States." Please tell me you're not a birther, Donny. Maybe you just hang out too much in the echo chamber and hear stuff like this all the time and parrot it without thinking. Please tell me that's the case.
