Here in the UK a popular TV show will get maybe 17 Million viewers, while the show will be hailed a success it didn't grab the other 40 million people enough to make them tune in. Of course it's down to personal taste not just the quality of the product on offer. Please bear in mind I haven't seen Shrek 2 yet because it isn't released here in the UK until July!!!

To wit, what I wrote a few posts ago: >>>Had the masses of humanity fallen for SPIRITED AWAY's charms like say, a TITANIC, along with the critical press, then I'd have nothing to admit than "you know, it's not my speed, but there must be something there I'm missing." And I would indeed admit that if it were the case. That is what Inkan and Ursus will NOT admit here.<<< The fact, Inkan, is exactly THAT: You will not admit that certain humor is lost on you, for whatever reason. That it is NOT lost on the rest of us is frankly not our fault. Enjoy what you will, but please spare us insult, and please read more carefully in the future. This is one of the reasons I have to stop posting... this kind of diatribe gets nowhere with people who don't seek a CLEAR exchange of communication.

That movie's Thrace as modern city gag was already old when "The Flintstones" did it. "Hercules" was considerably trashed for making this Flintstones gag. Yet "Shrek 2" does basically the SAME gag, only it's a fairy tale city as a modern city instead of a mythological city, and everyone praises it. This makes me especially outraged as this is an injustice. Similarly, people were mostly critical of the referencing gags in "Home on the Range". Those gags made the 2D unit look dead on its feet."<<<<<<< yup, you got a point there...though I actually think Hercules was more clever than Shrek or Home on the Range...

I realized that B&B was a well written comedy with Mike Judge's good ear for realistic dialogue, but I didn't enjoy watching it because I couldn't stand the two leads. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is also a good cartoon, a good action cartoon with a self-parody sense of humor. But I never got too interested in it. Those are shows with good points that I didn't get. But I thought the "Shrek" gags I mentioned were outright bad and I explained what I thought was bad about them.

Me, I've been a Disney fan since as long as I can remember and a Japanese Animation fan for the past 5 years or so (Regarding the Spirited Away consensus thing, I have a long rant I can go on on how Disney itself tried to sink that film. That and Princess Mononoke.) But I have this wonderful ability to laugh at my fandom. I think some people take the attacks on Disney and other things in the movie just a bit too seriously. I am not an insane bandwagon person. I was aware of the movie's release because of a poster the bus I take to school went by every day. I don't watch much tv, so the only trailer I saw was at the movie theater when I went to see Van Helsing. I loved the first Shrek and so I went to see the second one the first day after my class let out at 7. I didn't read any reviews, didn't watch any interviews. I went in fresh. And I loved it. Yes, the story was cliche, but every movie story has cliche elements. Non-cliche things won't sell in Hollywood. A good movie will make the cliche enjoyable. Shrek 2 had wonderful flow to it, even better than the first. To me, the "Hero" sequence was one of the most well put-together scenes I've seen in any movie. And how can you not like Puss In Boots. My hero! (Seriously, my Dungeons and Dragons character plays out a lot like Puss. Cute face and all.) Put aside your "This movie is awful and cliche and it attacks Disney so it is evil and you all are insane for liking it you bandwagon people" campaign. Set that aside and go see this movie. You might be surprised. Or you might not. Your apprihension may force you to look for all the bad in this movie, and if it did I would not be shocked in the least. But give it a chance, please. And I love how many people pick out a few gags as the only cultural refrences in that opening scene. Everyone seems to miss the Street Fighter refrence. Fiona does one of Chun-Li's attacks followed by Ryu and Ken's Shoryouken. I found that funnier than the weak Spiderman refrence.

Are you saying that you will only consider a parody acceptable if it comes from the same studio? For the record, "Shrek 2" (which I presume you still haven't actually seen) has very, very few Disney references in it and none are exceptionally biting. Most of the parody is focused on fairy tales in general with a few other modern culture parodies as well. It doesn't come close to having as many direct references to Disney as the first film did. -Jeff

Originally Posted By Kar2oonMan >>It doesn't come close to having as many direct references to Disney as the first film did.<< Very true. A lot more pop culture references, a lot more fairy tale spoofs, a lot of Hollywood/LA trendy references, very few Disney jabs.
