Men say something sexist and inappropriate, then when called on it, they further rail on women for being oh so serious. Good god.

Some people don't find jokes like that funny, and you can't turn it around on them and making it their problem. Please, disagree with me all you want. I'm the one who left WE because of other posters. I'm here to discuss and to learn, so I love hearing the other side.

But so much for intelligent debate that one Republican was lamenting yesterday. Instead we get "she's hot and smart! It's on!" Gee, thanks for elevating the level of discourse. We further get comments essentially in the vein of "Obama sucks!" We get Darkbeer Post-O-Matic unable to actually express a personal thought posting offensive revisionist history about how the GOP was really the party of civil rights in the 50s and 60s (bleh!). Nothing about the issues, nothing about leadership. Just a bunch of jumping up and down like a monkey throwing its own feces in unrequited giddiness that those lousy Dems are goin' down! So much for being an American and showing respect for your fellow citizens.

But women deal with this kind of BS on a *daily* basis. I have a good friend at work who's sexually harassed by a co-worker at least once a week. I asked her why she doesn't go to HR or her boss. Her response was that it's hard enough being a woman in a management position. She doesn't need to go complain to a bunch of men about how she's being treated, only to get an eye-rolling response. She told me in no uncertain terms that I'm not to say anything either. She genuinely believes that it's the lesser of two evils to remain silent. Women shouldn't have to make that kind of choice, but thousands are forced to every day. I've watched my wife have to work twice as hard to break into the photography industry. She's quickly dismissed by the men and more than a few have made comments about her looks, completely ignoring her talent. These are serious issues, they aren't funny and they aren't concerns brought up by shrill "femi-nazis" who are hypersensitive. So even as a man, I can absolutely understand the frustration that the *first* comment anyone can make about Palin is that she's hot.

I will go and rethink how I post, what I say and how I say it. It never occurred to me that calling Palin "hot" was that big of a deal. What if I were gay and called Obama "hot?" A sincerely apology from me to you guys for being chauvinist and stupid. I'm not above apologizing. Thanks for reigning me in. I have to admit, it took ecdc's comments for me to slow down long enough to consider things. ecdc, I respect your posts, always. I can't call a woman "hot" then. Ok. I can handle that.

Originally Posted By Ursula <Okay who would you have had him choose and why? Do you really know much about this lady?> I'm learning, that's for sure. So far, she's been governor of a not-very populous state, she was mayor of a small town, she has five kids, she's anti-abortion person, she's a member of the NRA, she's against taxation (well, higher taxation) and she has a handicapped child that was born in the Spring. I'm trying to find out her stance on the war issues.

So, DVC dad, I was just watching one of the 24s and they were showing clips and she is a pretty lady. Not the sweetest voice, but she has that "wild Librarian of the old cliche" look. I can't believe that with all the time and money women put into make-up, hair, and clothes that they want guys to stop noticing. As was so susinctly put in "European Vacation": "Be a Pig!, Be a Pig!, Be a Pig!....."

But just don't go running around talking about how hot you think she is and confuse that with some example of why she is the most qualified woman he could have chosen. Look, I think it's great he chose a woman. I'm happy that now, no matter who wins, the white house will look that much different. There are PLENTY of people who will be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century whichever side wins. But since I'm willing to bet a paycheck that every one of us had our search engines running at full tilt asking "Sarah Palin who?" this morning, because we hadn't heard of her. So the thrill that SHE is THE ONE or that OBAMA IS DOOMED is a bit premature.
