(I just took a road trip to LA with a group of 5 guys. You can guess how some of that conversation went.) But a series of things in the last year, including my wife and friend at work, have shown me just how hard it is to be a woman in a man's world. Does a joke make someone sexist? Maybe not. But it does imply a lack of understanding and an attitude that isn't mindful of just how tough it really is. I'm still guilty of it and I'm still working on it. So I certainly don't want to portray myself as better than others, cause I'm far from it.

So, eventhough it hurt my little bitty feelings, I let your "some things never change comment" go. However, this is a complete insult. It may surprise, you but I'm far from THAT shallow. Jesus people, you guys keep burning good (or atleast somewhat acceptable) posters at the steak, and soon there will be no one left. The next time I come into WE, someone slap me PLEASE!

It is wrong to claim that McCain follows the party line.> He didn't used to, or at least not as much. But lately he's done so big time. <And that is just the beginning of it. To say that McCain is like Bush because they both are Pro-Life, and for less government, and that they support the 2nd amendment etc... that is fluff.> Well, there's way more than that (see below). <To say that McCain is just like Bush seems to suggest that the speaker of such statement is going to vote democrat no matter WHO is on the ticket.> Not at all. It's a simple fact that McCain has embraced most of Bush's position in the last couple of years. And he did so for pure political expediency - so that he could win the GOP primaries. Many in the GOP are HAPPY he's taking Bush's stances (that 20-some percentage who still approve of Bush that is probably 40-some percent or better of GOP primary voters), so to say he's taking Bush's stances is not just something a Democrat would say - it's something certain Republicans would say and be happy about. Hell, they pretty much forced him there. <<<You can't change things if you support doing the same major things as your predecessor.>>> <"the same major things" is a very general and vague...almost tired phrase. It has a nice ring to hear it, but it really has no meaning behind it.> Well, I ran some of them down earlier (probably another thread), but here goes again: Tax policy: McCain, who once (rightly) called Bush's tax cuts irresponsible, now wants to continue them. So on tax policy, there's no discernible difference between them. On Iraq, no discernible difference between them. On torture - there used to be. Sadly, not any more. (And again, this was McCain giving in to pure political expediency, which only makes it worse.) On energy policy. No discernible difference between them. On the type of judges they'd appoint: no discernible difference between them. McCain has been effusive in his praise of the ones Bush has appointed. Shall I go on? These are not "fluff" or minor matters - these are the important matters of the day. So I'll say it again: You can't change things if you support doing the same major things as your predecessor.

I may seem like a little cry baby who takes his ball and goes home, but I spend so much time apologizing to the same people over and over. But you know, it just is what it is. Thanks for the kudos though. It's one thing to call someone out. But its a whole other thing to hold others to a higher standard than the inquisitor holds himself (or herself) to. I guess Tooney has it right, "some things never change..." ...but the beat goes on. I know I won't be missed which means I really don't belong in the first place. I feel like Larry Byrd so often lately. You know, he stayed one season too long. I love you people. It's been one hell of a ride.

(Moms usually are granted more free time off than non-moms vs. the non-mom who can spend more time at work or at work social functions). I would imagine that Palin would get some on-the-fence voters swaying her way if she manages to find some middle ground for everyone.

I will take a break myself, as I'm am a bit hot under the collar after being told people like me who support Obama are delusional, see him as GOD, and so forth, only to have someone with little experience get the nod after hearing how important experience was when it means Obama. My apologies, DVC dad. I meant to to keep my comments more general and instead zeroed in on yours. I am sorry for that, it was overkill on my part. Have a nice weekend everyone.

When you face the uncomfortable position of being the only female or the older female or the minority female in an all male atmosphere this crap gets real old. DVC_dad I'm pretty tired of hearing your cry about old school LPers and the reason your coming and going constantly. I hate making this personal but you always do. It's a debate and when you make statements that are controversial, outrageous or on the edge either stick around and defend yourself or don't do it. It's pretty simple. I'm not a prude, I find certain people hot but I don't consider that a criteria for the President or Vice President of the United States. I know I know lighten up. Yeah, ok.

I've been trying to move her to Obama for months, but she's been stubbornly in the "undecided" camp, because there's something she likes about both McCain and Obama, and she always said she was going to wait for the veep picks, and maybe the debates if it still seemed even to her. Today she told me the Palin pick made up her mind - to vote for Obama. When she told me why it instantly rang true and made me think "why didn't I think of that?" (I sort of had, but not quite in this way.) I could tell the pick really ticked her off, and when I asked her why she said "Because there's no way that McCain picks an 18-month governor who 2 years ago was mayor of some tiny little town, if he's a man. No way! He'd be laughed out of town, and everybody would be going "whaaaa...???" So why is it any better just because she's a woman? It's completely patronizing, and yes I'm really ticked off about it." Of course she's right. If Palin were male, there's just no way that would have been the choice. Palin was picked for two reasons. 1). She's a woman, which IS patronizing; 2). She passes the far-right litmus tests. Yesterday I thought initially they may have been making a play for Hillary voters (especially based on what Palin said in her intro), but now I think it's not that so much (unless they're not thinking straight), but rather that she's simply YET ANOTHER McCain sop to the far right. He's been pandering and pandering and pandering to them for two years, but they're seemingly never satisfied. When he floated Tom Ridge's name, the far right reacted swiftly, and gave McCain his marching orders in no uncertain terms. You will NOT have someone pro-choice. And McCain said "yes sir, sorry, sir." So that left off Ridge, Lieberman, and probably Romney since he'd been pro-choice for a time in MA (when it was politically expedient for him). That left Pawlenty as the only acceptable name left on the short list, which meant McCain had a choice: safe but dull Pawlenty, or try to make a splash with someone the far right will love... hey, maybe a woman! McCain likes to say he puts "country first" but this pick unquestionably puts politics before country.
